Another way of knowing which one to use ( the gerund or the infinitive form ) is replacing the whole gerund phrase with the following abstract concepts: idea , success, problem, effort and the outcome and see if the new sentence make sense ;
Example :
1. I argued against ( the idea) ; it makes sense , so I can use the gerund phrase; I argued against cutting the budget ; I argued against voting for such a leader , I argued against sending messages with subtle meanings to this particular class of individuals
2. My brother ate ....... breakfast twice this morning, if I try to insert any of the above mentioned abstracts, it just won't fit .. so I can't use a gerund.
