I've owned several BMWs from this era, including a couple of E46s. They are getting old now and do suffer from old car problems. Having said that, the cars from this era are still designed with maintenance in mind, so they are very logical to work on. They're probably the best candidate for someone wanting to learn DIY mechanics. In Europe we had the 320d which is a diesel and good for 47mpg, but they have swirl flaps where the screws holding them in place can loosen and fall into the engine causing catastrophic damage. A swirl flap delete is the solution. Also if looking at buying any of these do check the plastic parts under the bonnet, heat and age will cause them to become brittle over time. the usual suspects here are the coolant reservoir bottle, the headlamp adjusters, and the coolant hose connectors. And then there's the rust- BMWs from any era are very prone to rust so any damp climate cars will most likely have had bodywork repairs done by now. Once they're fully sorted though, they are very rewarding cars to drive.

As a 12 year old in 2001, my grandpa asked what my dream car was... After a moment I said: "BMW, 2.5-3 liter inline 6, manual transmission, all wheel drive, and if possible, make it a wagon." Well... I found it, as an adult, and I couldn't be happier with my 2001 pre-LCI 325xi Touring.

Got my post-facelift 330i a few weeks ago. It's my first car. I love it so much it's kind of scary. Looked through the previous owner's repair bills though, and they're not for the faint of heart. Good luck to me.

I'm only 15 at the moment with a BMW 330ci e46 2003 make and with little to no knowledge of cars, in fact I'm the last person you'd ever wanna run into but I think my car runs well and its really gotten me into cars more and more by the min, even sitting in it feels nice and of course driving it is 100x better

I've kept a 2000 323i w/ 140K miles for 10 years, sits in garage, should i keep it?, fix it up?, (some interior headliner etc) nasty electrical issues, like the windows and sunroof open for no reason after it rains--lol, i had to install a battery switch to use every time i park it... you're right about the engine cooling as it cracked the reservoir on me, and sometimes warns low coolant when there is plenty. its Got airbag lite, but the coolant system scares me the most. how can i beef up the coolant system? Or should I just get rid of it? It's not worth much really, but I like its a manual 5 speed, fun to drive. I've thought about "blowing it " with a turbo--is that a good idea?

Not in a great place financially, but I live with my parents and am in school for engineering. Almost sold my 6 speed 330xi that I basically inherited from my grandma because school is expensive and stuff. Sticking it out, I know I'll make decent money after school and in a couple years instead of buying some brand new car I'm just going to pour some money back into her. This video helped me see the light and not get rid of it, I was damn near close to selling it. Love these cars man, even at 23 I just don't want to drive anything else my entire life. It was my first car when I was 16 and I just can't imagine driving anything else. All through high-school and even to this day, I never felt safer and more at peace than in an E46 cockpit with those orange interior lights. Absolute dream, life's so short, and committing to this car has made it a little better. I'm so happy to drive it, even when I have to go somewhere I don't want to be at

I had it 6 years now ; mint condition.

Even the 4cyl models are fun, they're also practically front-mid engined with only a few centimeters of the block ahead of the front axle, what you loose in power you gain in lightness and handling.

2004 330i here its had a lot of stuff done now Im doing any repairs I can myself tryna get better mpg looking to do fuel pump, O2 sensors and MAF next for good measure pretty sure I can handle those myself. Cooling system has been overhauled. Plus steering pump hoses a couple leaks and several other things. New tires & suspension done. Bit by bit. Hope it doesnt break me cuz damnnnnn Im in love. Drove a new one and its fun as hell but nowhere near the same feel.

i never wanted a E46.. ive always preferd other european companies over BMW such as Saab, Mercedes and porche. but then i stumbled upon what were to be my first BMW. a 2003 E46 318D wagon in beautiful condition. i was stunned when i first saw it, when i first saw it i was like "this cant be the car right?.. right??" but no that was the car. i greeted the owner and we started talking. he wanted around 1950 euros for it. and i litteraly couldnt find anything wrong with it so i gave him 1950 euros. and god be damned because my E46 have litteraly been my most reliable and in best condition car i have ever owned. going from disliking BMW to absolute adore my E46. other than that i do indeed drive it on snow i take care of it the same way i do with my Saab 900 turbo. this was made to be my daily driver. and it will stay in my owner ship for many years to come

I recently bought a 1999 e46 320i in great working condition at 125ks for $700 and i replaced all the interiors colours with metallic crimson and black. Its currently being painted two toned glossy black and crimson. Any suggestions for engine swaps?

I found mine for 1400$ needed 500$ to be road worthy.. ..... Extra 3k later and can't be happier

E46 are nice fucking cars great body styling and great performance and handling super sturdy car for canyon runs and drifting... pretty reliable just gotta understand the failure points 💯
