That has to be the reason why there's practically no mention of the similarity between this scene and Flannery O'Connor's "A Good Man Is Hard To Find." (1953 )
In O'Connor's short story, a family that was also driving down a deserted road gets into an accident in which the grandmother (who had been riding in the back) is thrown onto the front seat, "... her hat still pinned to her head but the broken front brim standing up at a jaunty angle ..."

You know, I’ve probably seen this movie a couple dozen times, and I just noticed that after the crash, Audrey and Rusty are suddenly in the front seat. They kept it subtle. Well played.
