Good glue is expensive, but compared to the cost of your time, it’s a minor expense.

Thanks Carl, from Canada 🇨🇦. Well done.
I’ve done a number of glued up laminations and they’re always a journey in running out of clamps, wood breaking, jigs breaking, glue all over the place, running out of room and what seems to be a breakneck pace. In then end,though, they are worth it and look great. Thanks for showing us your techniques.

Had no luck gluing a red oak tabletop with epoxy because of the tannins. Resorcinol glue works best.

Instead of plastic try covering your work surface with clear packing tape. Works great for glue-ups.

Nice video.
I also like watching the video channel >Engels Coach Shop< because it shows an "old profession" - that of a wheelwright/wagon builder. He is versatile, he shows metalworking, woodworking and fabric processing when he sews seat covers and/or carriage roofs. When he sews, he has a very old sewing machine.
I only use the Titebond glue because it can be washed off with water when you use it and if something happens to the piece of wood after a few years, you can dissolve the old Titebond glue with hot water and re-glue it.

From the sneak peak at the end of the video it does look like the finished beams are going to be gorgeous. Good work! 👍
I'm glad you discovered Dave Engels. Even though his steam bending methods aren't a fit for your project, there's lots of other things he does that will be applicable.

love watching your process of working out problems. All way a good watch. Just one thing. You squeezing the the glue bottles, I know it is thing that people believe less air in the bottle, the glue will not dry out. Save your self time and hassle. There is all way air touching the top surface of the glue, and it is the exact same surface area of contact despite how much air is in the top of the bottle.

No wonder the plywood strips exploded, you should have put them horizontally instead of vertically. We live and we learn

You can steam your wood using a simple plastic sleeve and basic steamer attached from a DIY store.

one tip i could say is you should have used a non stick sheet of plywood for the table top would have been much better than the sheet of plastic but nice job

@funwithmadness
@funwithmadness - 16.08.2024 18:57

Not that it helps you now, but if you use packing tape on the table surface instead of the plastic sheet, you don't have to fiddle with it as much and glue still doesn't stick (much). By the way, good job. I've done similar work in the past but not with oak. This was a beast of a job that you did!

@bobbyb1607
@bobbyb1607 - 03.09.2024 00:52

You came up with some good solutions to speed up the process. Applying glue to both sides helps to slow down set time because there is a little more glue than the bare wood can soak up, and it is supposed to be 20% stronger than only gluing 1 side. Also PVA glue can be thinned up to about 5% without affecting bond strength and will also slow down set time. Good work.

Hey Carl, i really enjoy your project! Just a little tip from a carpenter for saving some money from sawblade sharpening: What you are using here are universal blades. For long rip cuts especially in hardwood like oak i'd suggest using rip cut blades (for your 85mm saw those with 12 teeth). That's a lot easier on the machine aswell ;)
Keep up the good work and best wishes to you from germany!
