Thanks for the video. When I first learned to snowboard, I was more nervous getting off the lift than going down. I would add that you should communicate with others on the lift so you know which way everyone is going when they get off.

If you do fall don't just lay there. Try to move out of the way of incoming people.

Also be aware of the incoming chairs. You don't want to be hit by a chair either.

One thing that bother me when I started snowboarding and learning to get off lift was when people would park right in front of the lift exit after getting off. Can't exactly go straight all time. :\

It took me going to big snow 4 times before finally mastering the ski lift 🤣🤣 I had to really get more of my foot off the board to drag it into the snow. Me and that yellow wall became best friends

The first time me and my buddies all tried to get off of a ski lift together as beginners we all grabbed the person in front of us and just had a chain reaction of falling over

I would say sitting far left on the chairlift as a beginner (regular foot) is actually easier. Turning left to stop heel-edge with one foot strapped in is easier balance wise I think, and you need to be far left in order to do that without running into any of your chairlift mates. You can also stop by going straight (90% of your weight on your left foot) and pressing your left foot down (P=F/A) to slow you down.

The lessons in the late 90s didn't work for me, including pushing off on the lift. I'm 6'3 and long legged, so that kept throwing my balance off. Instead, someone told me to just stand up straight and pointed forward. Then let the chair push my leg and ease me forward. Those were fun non-detachable days: where it was better to lie down and wait for the chair to clear before getting out of the way.

Another thing I noticed was that one of my beginner friends just aimed for a trash can that's typically near off ramps... aka a long run out without trying to turn.

When I started snowboarding over 30 years ago, there was no one else around to watch or to show you how to ride the lift with a snowboard. I just got on and got off. I spent a lot of time skating around with my board when I first got it so I was ready to ride the lift but I had no idea that was a way to get ready to ride the lift.

A trick I have been doing since the early 90s is where I'm goofy and the majority of other riders are regular is to make it easier to get on the lift is to flip my board around so my front foot is in the back and my board faces the way the regular riders are. Then once I'm on the lift I flip it around near the top. I used to be able to get on and off the lift fakie. It's good to get comfortable as possible getting on and off the lift in every possible way, it can save you from injury.

I’ve made it a personal goal this season to smash into anyone sitting right at the bottom of the lift when you get off. Move or the freight train is coming! Choo chooooo! Why do these idiots stop and strap in right where people are riding off the lift!!??

Riding all the way to the end when getting off the lift is the best tip. I feel most people fall because they try to stop or turn too early.
And if you do fall get out of the way as quick as possible! Nothing worse than people just sitting or lying there in front of the next group getting off

Before exiting the lift, shift your weight to sit on your back foot butt cheek. Almost sitting sideways. This will ensure the board is pointing straight when it touches the snow coming off the lift.

Little late to the party probably but I think you left out the biggest tip; buy yourself a spiked stomp pad and place it with your boot maxed out position against your other binding (the binding with no boot in it) Since I have done that I have a lot more control coming off the chair and I don't fall anymore. Braking with your toes with your free foot is a good tip though and I use it a lot.

Great video. But I think one key tip was left out. Do not look down at your feet when exiting the lift, except for placement, since this can cause you to lose your balance. Keep your head up and look straight ahead.

Great advice, Jonathan. I would add that a detachable chairlift (as opposed to a fixed grip seen in the video) is great for beginners as well because chairs slow down at each end of the lift.

Also, some resorts mandate the use of the bar. It's actually required by law here in Vermont.

Going to try teaching my kid to snowboard tomorrow and looking for teaching tips when I found this vid. Biggest tip/pet peeve is riding a lift with skiers. Every dang one of them jams their poles into the ground when exiting the lift. Except, when it's a boarder next to them, they jam their poles into the back of your board, making a wipeout almost certain!

First, thank you for validating my feelings that the ski lift is scary!LOL (Had at least a couple nightmares about it on my first snowboard trip to Colorado 😂) super helpful video too! I think my problem is evenly distributing my weight when I hit that warrior pose. Didn’t realize all or most of my weight should be on the front leg. Will try this when I head back out to the snow this year 😄 🏂🏂

I’ve been going for a few years now, but probably never as frequently as I should to master this. And honestly, the lift scares me more than anything else. My favorite place to go in Illinois is called Chestnut because when you get there you start at the top of the mountain first and you can go down without having to get on the lift first.😂😂😂
