For me the trick is that before Christianity we had our own ethnic religion, and it was replaced with Jesus. That got retarded too, so clearly there are specific religions that specific people should follow to stay on track spiritually, which is abcore component of life on earth. Traditional christianity is also about "becoming god", in so far as what that phrase actually means is becoming "sons of God" or "gods by grace", and that is based the Scriptures.

No, you don't become part of the Trinity or dumb ass things like that, you don't become THE God, instead you become "like God", it's called Theosis or deification and it's a lifelong journey, it's the core idea in Orthodox Christianity, it's still found in roman-catholicism but pretty much been relegated to a joke in protestantism.

By contrast, eastern mysticism a.k.a batshit crazy demonic sects all talk about Apotheosis, the idea of you either becoming divine by yourself, by your own means and energies, or you "accessing" the consciousness of God, or you becoming one with the only true God, or any other variation on this theme. But the idea in these cults is that you're either always part of God and your individuality is an illusion, or you mold your individuality with God and dissolve as a person. From the Brahman in the veddic (hindu) religions to all the other weird gnostic, dualistic, or monistic schools, it's always the same idea. "We're all just one". In fact in some of these cults the "God" is really the Universe itself and human persons are just complete illusions, that need to "return" to Brahman/the principle/God/whatever. It's really a deep resentment of individual personhood.

Back to christian Theosis:

The christian idea of Theosis is that we are trying to re-gain something that Adam lost in Eden, we don't achieve Theosis by our own energies, but by external energies, from God, by participating in Him via the Church and Sacraments. We are called to be "co-workers" or Sinergoi with God, that is the means by which Salvation is understood in traditional christianity, there is no tension between works vs faith. It's both works and faith, it's co-working.

Also, the person, YOU as a person is not something that dissapears upon Theosis, "becoming one with God" doesn't destroy your person, you are meant to live eternally as a person, a distinct person from all other persons and God. And we believe that those who have lived godly lives, a.k.a the Saints (which we all called to be), await in a living state in Heaven, and they await the general ressurection of all men, the Final Judgment, and ultimately the regeneration of the world. And after that, in that regenerated world, that is where Eternal Life happens, where it's not just the soul and spirit, but also the BODY that experiences the fullness of Theosis.
