Exploring the Story of Demon's Souls (Lore)

I think it's hilarious but at the same time acurate that the whole reason humanity doomed itself was because it's leader got bored and awakened a demon from it's slumber because it got curious as to see what would happen

What if there is no virtually no difference between a demon and a human. The only difference is that a demon is an amalgam of souls together and the body comes to reflect the state of that amalgamation. Soulsborne games often play around with that concept that monsters in game are the twisted forms of mortals. The old one absorbs souls and creates demons possibly by overloading that body with souls it has absorbed.

I’m surprised you didn’t bring up yuria when talking about sage freike’s suggestion to join the old one. She offers an interesting counterbalance to both saint urban and frieke. She is also detested by urban but she doesn’t disagree with his assessment of magic. Like sage frieke she sought the power and understanding of demons souls but unlike frieke she became weary of the idea that they could ever do good in the world. Frieke dismissed her as a lesser magician due to her “emotional” magic but her spells are often better than his (she sells firestorm after all). While she has a low opinion of herself and her ability, she is actually more aware of the demons souls affect on people than anybody else. She is the one who warns you against following freke’s suggestion. She realized that no matter the intentions, the wrongs of the world cannot be righted by demon souls. As she says, “If the demon soul is cursed, so is the witchcraft”. If frieke is more experienced than urban, then yuria is more experienced than frieke.

So Reapers we’re once the highly
revered Shaman’s of the Shadowmen. The Shadowlurkers were once the men and woman who inhabited the island, and the Skeletons, along with the Old Hero, were all distinguished warriors in life.

Great video! I’ve only played the dark souls games but i had two observations from watching this.
- The Old Demon Monk, a decaying corpse on a throne wrapped in that yellow garb seems like a Reference to “The king in Yellow” story by Robert Chambers. That story was a big influence on the writings of Lovecraft, who in turn was a big influence on the
Souls series.
- I had no idea that Yhorm the giant was a successor to the Old hero fight in this game, the move-set and boss room are so similar.

I wish bluepoint would of been brave and actually animated Ostrava committing suicide by stabbing himself in the chest. I know suicide is a very touchy subject and should never be glorified but I think by actually showing him doing the deed it would of made it all the more tragic and heartbreaking and truly show the player the unimaginable pain he felt once he was finally confronted with the truth of what his father had become..

The great old one in my mind is a near perfect representation of the Demiurge who believes itself to be the one and only God and therefore claims its right to supremacy over all humanity and rules over humans with an iron fist. Furthermore the Demiurge is quick to anger when disobeyed and capable of great jealousy whenever it's creations shower praise which rightfully belongs to it on others whether that be human rulers or other Gods. However in the great old one's case I don't think jealously plays as much of a part as rage due to humans wanting more than what the Demiurge has already given them and in Demons souls that something is the soul arts or in other words the coveting of the great old one's power in order to bolster your own power and prosperity. Honestly just imagine for a second being the old one and creating humanity and giving them everything they ever could possibly need and yet still be so greedy that they want the one thing they're not supposed to possess.. So in unfathomable rage the Demiurge gives them exactly what they want and as a result destroy themselves as greed is the greatest of poisons..

I have a low-key theory that Patches is actually a Monumental that just grew up when he thought to himself "you guys had one job and you fucked it up" and just decided to fuck over humans for the rest of his life.

It's hard finding solid Demon's Souls content lately thanks to the remake but this was better than I expected, thanks lol

having just seen a bloodborne lore video I was very surprised about the mention about a moonlight sword in both games, does that mean that both or all three games are found in the same universe? or even planet that is?

I don't think Demon's Souls is merely the second time the Old One has been awoken. Once you get down there you see hundreds of metal stakes dotting the land and pierced into the Old One itself. As if this exact same scenario has been repeated hundreds of times and humanity has just been lucky to come back from the brink each time so far.

I wonder if “the long forgotten soul arts” means Demons souls took place so far into the future from DS1, it even surpasses DS2.

I know it's a small detail but I can't get past the beginning. "The damage was indescribable. Here's how the monumental describes it." But I mean I love souls lore so small price to pay lol

You gotta love the souls games, each one of them is like watching Muholland Drive, free interpretation !

Demon's Souls doesn't come close to being my favorite, but there's something special about that game that's not evident in any of the titles that came after it. The peculiar bleak atmosphere, the charming jank and the way it harmonizes its gameplay with its narrative themes and the overall story, something all the subsequent games more or less expanded on in various different ways and with varrying degrees of success, but there's just something about it I can't quite pin down and say what it is. But it makes it stand out in ways no other game in the From Soft catalog does. A true gem.

I just bought a PS3 for the soul (heh heh) purpose of playing this game. Can’t flippin’ wait!
