Recorded live at the Marlene Meyerson JCC, Neal Barnard, MD, discusses the science behind how foods affect our hormones—and our health. In his new book, Your Body in Balance, Dr. Barnard shares how common hormone-related conditions—like infertility, weight gain, menopausal symptoms, breast and prostate cancers, thyroid problems, and acne—can be affected by and improved by simple diet changes. Your Body in Balance is available now wherever books are sold!

Simple: man eating soya turns into woman.Diabetic cant achieve low carb- keto on vegan vegetarian diet because all sources of vegan proteins are full of carbs. You can't win on vegan diet. How you gonna treat person wit autoimmune stomach lining inflamation with dysplasia metaplasia on vegan diet ( when main problem is to deliver iron and b12 for not to die with anemia? ) By...blood transfusions?😂 You expect this ( ill already person...) to absorb non chem iron from weeds grass roots? 😂

your comments on hormones are horrific. you intentionally ignore metabolic health. If you change from a lousy diet to whole organic foods of course you will gain some benefit. However, at the same time you are ruining your metabolic health but you REFUSE to talk about how high sugar low fat foods cause these problems. SHOW US THE EVIDENCE. You can't because it does not exist. Stop lying.

If you go to the doctor and say that you inject yourself with estrogen every day without a prescription, he will take it very seriously.
If you say that you eat butter and meat every day, he will not pay attention to it.

Great talk, I wish I had know about plant based eating when I had periods. I had extremely heavy looooong periods. Now I am plant based at 67 yrs and riding my bike on 1,000 mike trips and backpacking. I feel great! Also I have always had fine thin straight hair and now it is thick and curly...

I found this out on my own. I’ve never been on birth control and have never really talked to a doctor about it. Once I stopped eating bad foods and eating better especially around the week before my period, I found that my cramps were nearly non-existent. When I was younger (13-21) my periods lasted 7-8days with the first 5 being unbearable. Now (22-present day) my periods last 4-5 days with the first day and a half being “heavy” with “cramps” but they are 99% better than before AND they are regular almost to the day. I use the “” because the last days of it now are light light and cramps are almost non-existent.

I know this doctor has done the reasearch and maybe I should finish watching everything carefully before commenting but the plant base-low fat diet is NOT for everyone. For one look at Jordan Peterson’s daughter example. She thrives on the opposite. I personally tried for 3 months keto in three time of my life and it was terrible. I did the same with a vegan diet and I lost my periods. For me a balanced diet (I don’t include dairy anyways) works best, and keeps me having regular pain free periods. My point is, things work differently for each person, so don’t marry to one diet, see what works and monitor yourself carefully. But, definitely increasing plant-based food and reducing oil will help anyones health overall.

I am a firm believer that men and women require different diets. Women seem to require a more plant based diet where men require a more carnivorous diet. This man seems to be quite astute.

The definition of Food is that which is in design or has been created just for us by our Creator. Food always keeps us healthy and provides us with nourishment...always. Humans have attempted to imitate Food ( with artificial colors and flavors) to atTEMPT to substitute themselves as the Creator. When you eat of imitation of Food, your body goes out of design and then deteriorates causing it to be stuck in the past with the eventuality of expiration. Those who are in design know the difference and stay in design to see the Future. Eat as designed.

The problem is all of the is data is from epidemiological studies and it doesn’t compare a vegan to a healthy animal based diet. It only compares vegan to a Standard American Diet which of course will show improvements bc the average American eats like crap, is highly stressed, and doesn’t exercise. And the data is heavily influenced by healthy user bias. He doesn’t address this. Also dietary cholesterol and fat does not have anything to do with heart disease. Your hormones require those two things actually. Too many confounding variables here, although his presentation is nice he is omitting key details

Intuitively and for other reasons 3 years ago I decided, as being a Vegetarian most of my life, that I would totally stop with dairy… I was pretty much just eating cheese as I absolutely hate the liquid form since I was a kid. So lo and behold, after suffering all my life with “paralyzing period cramps” and have started with pre-menopause symptoms I just couldn’t believe I had a “nice” period for the first time in my life! But I’ve never had heard this speech before so clearly linking dairy with hormonal imbalances, and by that time I also make some changes on my my greens and exercises… but I decided to keep my changes and definitely not go back to dairy in anyway… 3 year laters and after watching this, now, I know and I can testify also that stop dairy does make a difference, a huge difference! Even my skin is better… I am stronger on my exercises, oh and sounds like menopause is not for me… not now… I wish I knew this when I was 17 yo what I know now in my 52 and growing “younger”… and no miserable periods for the last 3 years!! 🎉 Thank you Doctor for this video! (I already shared!) ❤

Meh. The conflicting info out there really makes it confusing. Personally it was dropping processed foods and starting fasting that helped me, not a particular diet. All organic ingredients, local, no matter if meat or plants. Drop plastics, switch to natural skin care, get a water filter etc. Anyway, that was just my experience, everyone is different. One may thrive on raw vegan, one may thrive on keto, as long as it's not excesively processed and full of additives.

The problem is you’ll get another doctor who will say the complete opposite and she/he will swear down that eating more animal protein is better ☹️
All bodies are different. We need to learn things for ourselves and stop looking to others for advice about our own lives. We too can pick up a book and become the master
Also, I believe sometimes bad periods are simply just genetic. Me and my mum have always had painful periods we eat healthy balanced diet. Some months my periods are worse than other months and other times they are easy yet my diet is the same.
On the other hand my sister eats like crap and her periods causes her no problems, no pain or heavy bleeding ever! Don’t forget, stress affects our hormones probably more so than food! Stress is number one cause of disease. These women who are affected by foods, probably have food allergies or intolerance.

She could have been pregnant but with how quick the picture was shown im very skeptical. I also want to know is this real 100 percernt chees we are talking about, or like fake cheese such as kraft single which have oil processed oil in them?

I had heavy bleeding that went on for months. I had huge fibroids and needed a hysterectomy. After doing some research I decided to change my diet to see if I could avoid surgery. I eliminated dairy, beef and chicken. In less than 2 weeks the bleeding stopped. A checkup a few months later showed the fibroids shrunk. This was way back in the 90s. I was so glad I tried a natural path to improve my health. Let food be thy medicine!
