I am new to photography, i have a goal to become a model photographer.

Thank you so much for this video. I have been interested in photography for some time. I am also a surfer among other sports but recently had an injury that will take about a year+ to come back from. I thought about delving into photography as a hobby and as a way to adventure in a non sports/physical way, so I am super stoked to hear that surf photography is how you started. I was recently doing a shoot for a client of mine and was asked if I ever took a course or went to school for photography. I was unsure as to how to answer this question. I'm 24 years old but have been taking photos since I was 15. I shot my very first wedding when I was 17.

Anyways, I have a lot of experience compared to people my age.

I've spent countless hours reading, watching videos, shooting, etc. Before my sister passed away last year, she was the one that really pushed me to shoot more and more. She always wanted pictures and this really helped me get a lot of practice.

Going back to my latest shoot, I simply told my client that though I have gone through a specific course or class, I've spent a lot of years studying on my own and I have been shooting since I was 15.

Is there a better way to answer this question? Or was that an appropriate answer? I get along with this client really well and they have hired me for other work aside from photography so I know they didn't mean any harm by the question. 

I get that question a lot though, whether I've gone to college or taken a photography class.

My advice for new photographers: buy a cheap film camera and £1000 worth of film. Spend a year taking film shots and learning about light, composition, and refining your creative eye. Become an assistant to a photographer whose work you admire. Also, study all the best photographers from pre-digital. Stay off social media! (except tutorials on YT) It's a massive distraction.
