How to remove a white background or make it transparent in photoshop

This video is out of date as of 11/26/23 and gives instructions for older versions of Photoshop.

Just spent 7 hours creating a logo. When I tried to render the vector, I deleted the background... and it still came out with a white background. Tried to go back in and the fuckin project wouldn't let me edit or even select the logo anymore. Fucking useless program.

weird, worked PERFECT first pic, then it wont work on any others!!!! i even tried the original again and NOPE1 when i hide the copy, nothing changes

my delete button opens up a ' Fill ' menu, how do you change that??

hey, just learning PS. ive always used LR for my photo editing but want to do something like this and i dont know PS well enough for it to work.

when i use the magic tool, or the select tool (either in the latest and greatest subscription version of PS) when i hit delete, it deletes what i want to keep and not the background.

also when i make my 'gray' rectangle to verify it worked, i cant get it to fill to a new color other than the default black. ive paused and played and paused and played numerous times following you step by step and its not working.

probably why i gave up on PS Elements 10 years ago.

this guy took his examples carefylly. no o's or enclosed white areas... so it;s just a noob solution to a much complexer question

brother just save the image and show opening it using a photo viewer... the background turns back to white.....what is the benifit of it, if only photoshop recognises the background as transparent?

when i do this on my tiff file it does not let me "delete". any suggestions?

when I pressed the delete button it showed me an error with text: could not complete your request because the smart object is not directly editable.

That's crazy I did what you said about five times and every time I do it. It deletes my logo not the background. I want the background deleted not my logo. I even inverted and did it the opposite way and it still deleted my logo not the background this is insane

I followed the steps easy enough and did make the background transparant, but...when I go to save it, it reverts back to the white background. ?????? So I tried saving it as a PNG and that did the trick.
