Something I find interesting is that in the book the phantom gives Christine her boundaries. And she literally slaps the door in his face when he walked into her dressing room unannounced. When the Phantom takes Christine down to his lair he then immediately begs for forgiveness since he tricked her. He was completely fine with Christine not wanting to marry him, he’s fine as long Christine and Raoul as long they stayed in the Opera House and Christine doesn’t loose the ring he gives her. And the climax in the book is when Christine loses the ring while making out with Raoul. Yes his behavior is still controlling yet not as extreme as in the film. Something I find interesting as well is the difference between the masquerade and the graveyard scene. The graveyard scene is when Raoul asked Christine about the man’s voice he heard in her dressing room (the phantom’s voice) and Christine got mad at him, that night Raoul watched Christine visit her fathers grave and the phantom played his violin for her. Raoul tried to go follow her, in the middle of the night, to a graveyard, and got jump scared by the Phantom. It’s not some big duel like in the movie. And the Masquerade scene was literally just Raoul complaining to Christine because he thought she wasn’t interested in him. She also left a note on the road for Raoul, telling him to show up at the Masquerade in a dress. And he DID. Then Christine kinda purposed kinda rejected Raoul. Then they went on the roof to talk shit about the phantom and make out. The whole book Raoul was very jealous to the point he shot a cat in his house because it could have been the phantom, in the middle of the night. Even from the first chapters Raoul is very jealous, of something he’s very unaware of, all he knows is what Christine told him about that phantom. And she explains that the Phantom is pathetic, repulsive, but has nice eyes. Christine in the novel isn’t naïve she knows the threat of the Phantom. The whole novel is Raoul and Phantom complaining to Christine about the other.

I loving this interpretation of PotO. I cried and the mies-en-scene is so real. They did created the opera complexes so it looks authentic and eventually dilapidated, depends on which scenes you see! ❤💕

To all the people saying Raoul was gaslighting Christine, he was saying that the Phantom was a real human man and not a ghost. He believed her about the stalking and the murder and such, just not that he was a ghost or some all powerful being.

Ok anyone else like how is a mild rash horrific? The phantom is supposed to be just a gaunt skeletal being based on the book and he was so not terrifying at all in this movie he looked like he had a rash

Dear Erik.
I love you, You helped me through my Dad’s death and ableism at school. What you did to Christine is abusive and criminal! You tricked her into believing you were the Angel of Music sent by Daddy Daaé is manipulative lying, (Also known as Grooming) and then you kidnapped her! As a disabled person, I think your anger at Christine removing your mask is justified, I also think saying, “I give you back your liberty, Christine, on condition that this ring is always on your finger. As long as you keep it, you will be protected against all danger and Erik will remain your friend. But woe to you if you ever part with it, for Erik will have his revenge!” is the most unloving thing ever! If you truly loved her you wouldn’t threaten revenge! You kidnapped her in a final attempt to force you to marry you and drove Raoul psychotic in your torture chamber, (Which I can tell you as a person with Bipolar one is traumatizing in and of itself) but Christine showed you compassion and you did the right thing and let them go. This will never excuse your behavior as a sexual predator! Your story will always have a special place in my heart, for I am autistic and never cut ties with anything, but Kidnapping also happens to be one of my special interests, so I see your acts of evil and will grieve the empowerment you gave me as a twelve-year-old child, as well as grieving you as a second Dad.
Love.

its so weird to me how it takes so long for my head to wrap around some actors play in completely different genres of movies.. as a kid it too me forever to figure out that the phantom was gerard butler.. ive always loved him in action and comedy movies but did not recognize him as the phantom for the longest time... and as a kid i couldnt watch horror films and just recently started watching them and enjoying them (now im my late 30s) the conjuring is my all time fave horror film franchise and it took this video right here to make me realize that patrick wilson plays in this and the conjuring films lol. brains are wild.

I used to idolize this movie and the desires of Phantom because of how tragically obsessed he was with Christine which I interpreted as “real love”. Now that I’m older I absolutely value Raoul gentle passion and the way he allowed Christine to be herself and decide things for herself rather than take her choice away. Being a teen is wanting the love that Phantom has, and being an adult is realizing how easy control and isolation and possession can come off as love.

Hot take: I loved Gerard as the Phantom. I like him better than anyone else I've seen play the Phantom in theater productions. They don't have the same effect on me that the movie does and I always find myself coming back to it. It's one of my all time favorite movies.
Yes, it was a great performance for Gerard Butler compared to his other films. Compared to Russel Crowe in the movie adaptation of Les Mis, Gerard was god-like perfection in this film. I wasn't a fan of Raoul because he comes on the scene like "We haven't seen each other in decades but I deserve you over someone you've known your whole life. I'm gonna gaslight you into thinking you're crazy because talking about what you're experiencing is taking your attention from me and making you mine, not his. Then I'm gonna use you to capture and kill my competition despite all the fear you've confided in me that I've gaslit you about AND NOT APOLOGIZE FOR DOING SO. But I'm the hero because I'm a pretty boy and not fucked up like him. 🙃" And his hair ruined it for me too.

May be controversial but I don’t think Hugh Jackman is that great at singing either, he was the worst singer in les miserables movie, he may be much better in person but on the screen, not my bag.

While thinking about the phantom being the Angel of Music, what if the Angel of Music is not an actual person. Rather, a part of Christine that she can choose to listen/integrate as a part of her or recognize that is there and also the Raoul side that is also there and how they can honor each other and allow to be seen and not “hide your face so the world will never see you” and allow Christine to be seen and maybe to choose herself? I do agree with these two that hugh jackman as the phantom would be amazing with his talent.

Something that always bothered me specifically about this adaptation (and i think it partly has to do with my opinion that professionally shot live performances of musicals are usually going to be better than movie adaptations), is the way they added a lot of dialogue, and made a lot of the lyrics spoken, and it just felt weird to me. Like I understand why they did that in some scenes, it made the context a little clearer, but other times it just felt weird. Also just a fun side note, we did phantom my sophomore year of highschool, and I was a ballet girl. Most fun role I had, lots of screaming and running in terror 😂
Also no offense to Gerard Butler but the 17 year old guy who played phantom in our production was at least as good of an actor and a much better singer.

I thought Gerard Butler did really well singing. Considering he wasn’t a classically trained opera singer and Emma was, Patrick was also a trained & experienced singer and Broadway performer.

I used to like Christine and the Phantom and was so disappointed when she went to Raul. As an adult I rewatched it again, and Without the obvious grooming as a child, He deceived her, he's a killer, he wants her to seduce her and corrupt her innocence. I dont know, I understood so much more about this movie, and by the end I was so happy Christine and Raul got together.

Another great video! This is one of the few channels where the commercials don't bother me, as the content is worth every second! However, the timing on one of them made me laugh very hard. "But what she lands on is this: 'Mini-wheats!" LOL
