Johnny Depp and Garry Oldman are probably the most versatile actors still working today, they can just instantly slip into these characters and breathe life into them. Garry Oldman was amazing playing Churchill in Darkest Hour. It was a monumental loss to lose him (JD) from The Pirates franchise and even though I wish he would go once more into the breach, I completely understand the reasons why. The real scallywags and scuppers were Disney firing him before the trial was over and he was proven innocent and the victim of DA and when they found out he was the victim and innocent they tried to get him back, the absolute hubris of Disney and shame known no bounds. Now it’s back on and they are doing an all female POTC that’s going to bomb so hard. No one is going to watch it.

So Jack sparrow the character is actually written without anything we saw on screen. So all of it was Johnny's creation!!! Wow. So it was basically a simple charecter.
