Opening scene- wind blast tests. Many of the crews on board the outer rim later died from radiation- they hadn't gotten a full handle on that notion when the tests were done.
The impact of radiation was figured out after a few surprising expirations.

I love old B movies. You got excitement and mystery at every turn. And if you weren't watching you might learn something.

What an incredibly TERRIBLE movie. A Sci-Fi film with absolutely ZERO "Sci", all "Fi"... and such terrible "Fi"...

I'm wondering how they got that huge machine to fit is such a small hole drilled by that very, small rock drill. And where does all that light come from?

While we look back at these older movies and how simple they were I think it is that that simpleness that makes them so enjoyable so many years later. The movie is all about each character losing hope for life and finding it renewed. No long complex dialog, no sex, no graphic violence needed just basic acting and simple props, it works. Unlike the productions today where everything tries so desperately to one up the previous movie with more flash I appreciate these movies and find them much more relaxing to watch.

In this subterranean exploration movie, there are no Deros or much of anything else living deep down in the Earth. All of the crew's casualties result from quirks of geophysics. No tribesmen or creatures attack the crew. This is just as tedious as it sounds.

As the movie explicitly states, the only thing down there is a world full of resources.

Lots and lots of resources.

One of the heroes is a billionaire's son, who invests in the drilling project (implicit subtext : it's only natural that he owns the machines and all future science deriving from their use). At one point, he jokingly predicts a real estate boom. Yeah, capitalism is so funny. I'm sure it was a relief to the audience that humanity would be taking its chains and its crypto-caste, er, class system along with it.

If future science can't even free us from wage slavery, it can't do much, can it ?

If there's a lesson in this movie, it's in the way that the movie uses scientific idealism as a tool in popular mystification. The movie thus becomes a capitalist tract.

In fact, the movie's prediction of humanity's thermonuclear extinction is thus rendered the only bright spot in the whole freakin' mess - but that's temporary, since the rain of H-bombs would destroy the entire ecosphere.

So the Tuesday night bowling team decided to make a sci fi movie, starring themselves and a hired girl. They must have been rich because a movie like this costs several hundreds of dollars to make.

Not real bad. I couldn't help but wonder why their batteries didn't run down. Nobody mentioned the drive mechanisms or source of power for the craft that, supposedly, ran, probably 10,000, or more, miles to make it over 1600 miles below sea level, or the surface of the Earth. It also, apparently, after sinking, was under 2500 miles of water, with the water pressure at about 6,000,000 pounds per square inch. I don't think that would have worked very well for the craft, or its occupants. Just saying.
