We Are Alta - Ski Utah

I was interested in snowboarding here any advice?

I was looking forward to tying out utah. Now that I know the best resort wont allow me in for what I choose to ride. I think Ill go to big sky instead.

do you have any snowboard rentals by chance?

I've skied more than 30 western resorts, and the Alta ski experience, is in my opinion, unparalleled. Last year, I skied Alta 6 days after the last significant snowfall traversing 1/4 mile out onto Devil's Castle, dropping in, and made turns down and around Cecret Chutes through knee deep powder that is simply indescribable to those who haven't skied Alta. It was as if I was skiing through sugar. The resistance was enough that I knew I was navigating a powderfield, but not enough to hinder my confidence or pace. The snow gave off an audible sound, as it parted around my boots, as if I was pouring sugar into a large bowl. The week-old snow was so dry that that as it sprayed, no large or small clumps of snow were visible- but appeared as smoke rising and blowing away in the wind. The dopamine hit was so sublime that I felt as if I was the only person on earth and that all was well.

Alta: We embrace fully able bodied skiing. Oh your doctor advises snowboarding due to prior knee injuries? Guess you aren't welcome here.

I’d love to come to ALTA with my family but 1/2 of us ski and the others snowboard. Guess I’ll have to patronize resorts that accept all sorts of families. I really don’t think a private entity should be allowed to use public land and then discriminate against families like this.

Free Alta. It can bend over, go out of business, have a landslide overnight the whole resort, and if no one was hurt, I wouldn’t care. As a snowboarder and SKIER it’s absurd how skiers treat snowboarder there. Cursing, harassing, even calling police. It’s public land, so share. It might be too late Alta. Everyone else in the skiing community expect you “anti-snowboarding” friend group hates you.

Alta is definitely about the snow and challenging terrain. It has 2,200 skiable acres. Although they list 119 trails the real appeal is the off piste skiing that is accessible through Avalanche gates and long traverses. There are also iconic Chutes that skiers hike up to ski. It doesn’t have lots of easy groomed runs or ski night life. You go to Alta to ski powder and off piste. Last January 2020 the snow fall was 150 inches for the month. Avalanches closed the road for three days in February. Driving up Little Cottonwood Cannon road you will see ski tracks made by Backcountry skiers who skin up before the sun rises the ski down then go,to work. It is truly a hardcore diehard area that is unique. I started skiing Alta in 1989 on vacation. Now that I have retired Alta is my home mountain.

alta makes me puke!! I am from Europe, And I can not see why people in the US think they live in the land of the free. Plus this is just some lame Mormon bllsht!! Grow up UTAH!! I went to Utah to ski in January 2018 when they had a very bad year with snow choosing Brighton, Solitude, and Park City. I didn’t go to Alta, but my old ski instructor warned me it was a lot of very steep runs, even though the map of Alta has no double black diamonds. I still want to go there someday. I loved the skiing around SLC, but the city is so freaking boring and no culture, just a bunch of bland Mormon white people content just existing!

Let's face it. The snowboarders earned their horrible reputation 20 years ago. So they are going to have to work hard to change the negative public opinion of them. The fact is that skiers and snow boarders carry different lines down the run. Most snow boarders do not have the skills to perform an evasive maneuver when a skier in front of them does something unpredictable. Many skiers have been seriously injured and several killed by irresponsible snow boarders. Here at Mt Bachelor we all get along just find, but then again the younger generation of Bend is generally very respectful. Unfortunately, that is not true of other regions, particularly California (I lived there 15 years, and that's why I left).

So glad that Alta and Mad River Glen remain skier-only resorts. Whoever says that skiing isn't popular is a dumbass, I know tons of people who are choosing skiing instead of boarding. Skiing has come back big time. It's funny how many butthurt people whine about how they can't board Alta or Mad River Glen. There's literally hundreds of other resorts to choose from. And the discrimination claim? Laughable. There's a reason why their frivolous lawsuit didn't go anywhere. If you want to ride ALTA, then go on skis. It's that simple. 🎿
