All of these woes are due to the legal system that plagues medicine. Could the med doc establish a patient's capacity? Sure! Would it look more credible and be less likely to cause legal issues if a psychiatrist did it instead? Absolutely.

Symptoms of behavioral and cognitive disorders in adults:

- Impulsiveness and hyperactivity, with inability to regulate behavior.
- Poor concentration and short-term memory.
- Constant mood and personality changes.
- Emotional immaturity.
- Inability to be aware and correct their negative traits and mistakes.
- Childish and loud behavior.
- Lack of empathy and understanding the perspective of others.
- Little or no perseverance and discipline.
- Erratic, disorganized and unpredictable behavior.
- Obsessions and compulsions.
- Inability to remain quiet in public spaces.
- Poor spatial skills and clumsy demeanor.
- Outbursts of neurosis.

"I just put a consult in for this woman, she won't stop crying because we just notified her that her son just was killed in a car accident and her husband is badly injured".... "soooo I'm not sure she's appropriate for inpatient hospitalization" -- attending asks to speak with MY attending...

While I am glad that the medical community has finally started to recognize that mental health is a real thing, the over-reliance on pinning normal human reactions to psychiatric diagnosis like depression, anxiety, etc is infuriating at best.

… yep you burned that bridge as soon as you got the specialty wrong. Also very surprised he agreed to do a capacity assessment for a consult.

My favourite is still "get a psych consult, the patient was ... Crying ..."
