I remember my first terraria experience, I somehow got pretty into the game even though I knew nothing about it. I rememver I went into the mines, got staff, built a house and apartments for npcs, had first clash with the underground desert, got absolutely freaked out by man eaters in the jungle, killed eye of cthulu, found a beehive etc. It was pretty amazing but as you said, I didn't really get into it until I researched it and learned how little I actually experienced. That wasn't very long ago so this is honestly what reminds me of how hard terraria is to get into and even though I love the game, I think giving the player so much progression with so little hints is bad design. Just a tiny message a guide could say that would push the player into finding some stuff or on how to spawn some bosses would help. You cannot really convibce me that people who know nothing about the game would manage to spawn multiple bosses without researching the game at all, let alone get to hardmode on their own

Minecraft feels like it lacks goals except for like the End Dragon witch is basically a "snack food" goal anyway.
Terraria feels like you are ment to be hard focusing on the goals, witch can be inteimateding going into it. Even for players that would like that kind of thing once they get into it.

I love both games, but I seem to prefer terraria as it is difficult but at the same time doesn't feel disheartening when you die. Sure I've beat minecraft without dying but that Is because I'm extremely cautious when playing, this results in a more stressful experience tho I still want to play.

Another thing I want to say is that I like the durability in minecraft as it makes your weapons and armour feel more sentimental as you can save your item before it breaks and hang it in an item frame or put armour in an armoury before you move onto another, and it's a good feeling seeing all your accomplishments.

I do agree with the rest of your take though. You did a good job.
Terraria > Minecraft

Only reason id check out the wiki is to remind myself the ore tiers as it ever sinds they made alternatives because you always get a mix or ores rather then original or alternative.

short answer, yes. yes it is. but thats the beauty of it. you are lost, dont know what to do, and you can do everything right from the start.

wanna go explore? go ahead!

wanna go to the caves below? go ahead!

wanna start building a base for you to store items? chop down a tree and go ahead!

only problem i had my first playthrough was not knowing to do next, but a quick google search told me just about anything i needed to know to keep progressing.

yes, the difficulty might be high, even for casual mode, but that just makes it that much better when you actually beat them. you feel the progress you made, instead of being like "yo, i killed him, now what"

minecraft feels like playing with legos; relatively simple but fun, versatile and open ended that is incrementally expanded upon with new legos.
terraria is more like a series of puzzles. you acquire the pieces to solve the puzzle (the bosses), put it together and move on to the next puzzle.

minecraft isn't the immediate goal oriented type of game that terraria is. i prefer terraria but i also prefer arcade style games to something like, harvest moon for example.

I Am A MineCraft Gamer, Because I Like Building, And Building In 3D Can Make Stuff Look So Much Better. I Also Use Mods To Add In New Blocks, Like Chairs And Stuff. But When I Played Terraria For The First Time, It Helped Me So Much To Have A Friend There To Help Me Learn The Game. I Like Both Games, But I Play MineCraft More.

I always see people complain about the "lack of tutorial"
But when I first played Terraria? I used the guide for info on what to do.
And that worked perfectly fine and now I do crazy expert and master mode runs.
I feel like people that complain about the lack of hand holding are too used to more modern games when it comes to the start being easy.

And as for not knowing what you're supposed to do? Experiment.
Terraria is not a game where you need a wiki to figure things out.
The guide tells you everything you need to know WHEN you need to know it.
And when it comes to late game, by then you should have an idea of what's going on, and you get hints on what to do next.

Edit: I also started playing Terraria on the 1.0.2 build, I've been here basically since the start.

Terraria's difficulty really hit hard for 8 year old me, but that made the moments like beating the Wall of Flesh for the first time and getting my first Night's Edge (back when the meta weapons weren't really of concern in the community) such crowning achievements that I'll remember forever.

I’ve always liked the exploration/learning aspect of these games to be the most fun, hence why I prefer Terraria.
Aldo, back in Minecraft’s first popularity spike, it too was a very “wiki required” type of game. No recipe book back in 2013.

I have a Minecraft world with my girlfriend. I asked her if she would play terraria and she insists she sucks at it, and that she “died at the first boss, that stupid skeleton in the dungeon” and was flabbergasted when I explained it’s a one shot and you aren’t expected to kill the guardian
Edit: she also didn’t know you could talk to npcs or that the guide existed

Do people even "read" wikis? Don't they just glance them like you do?

Very interesting and well-made video. I found Terraria quite difficult to get into but I don't think I gave it enough of a chance. I might have to try it again with the wiki and see how it goes
