Rascal Flatts - What Hurts the Most (Joe Don Rooney guitar solo cover)
Here’s my cover of the solo from the power ballad ‘What Hurts the Most’ by Rascal Flatts, as played on the record by Joe Don Rooney 😎🇺🇸🎸
What can I say, the trio of Rascal Flatts are just absolute genius songwriters, with a huge catalog of hits including: Banjo, These Days, My Wish, Bless the Broken Road, Life is a Highway and of course What Hurts the Most. Their three-part vocal harmony is absolutely stunning, which is why they’re admired so much.
Joe Don Rooney is a truly great guitar player, with a great sense of feel and tone, both rhythm and lead, and it shows in What Hurts the Most and I wanted to try an capture that tone that Joe achieved on the record as much as I could. When they recorded this track, Joe tuned his guitar down a half step and used a capo on the second fret.
I had a good few takes at recording this cover, til I was happy with what I got.
Rascal Flatts are a band that I’ve always wanted to see live, and was absolutely gutted when I saw four years ago that they had disbanded, with Gary LeVox now as a solo artist. I hope one day in the future they’ll reform and record new music and tour again. I mean, if Brooks & Dunn can do it, then so can they…
“Never say never” as the old saying goes.
