It’s hand’s down one of my favorite games one of the best i ever played. I played FF10 when i was younger on my ps2 i loved that game i tried FF7 on ps1 i believe but i was so young i didn’t get far and i don’t remember much but playing FF16 I’m now playing FF7 remake after just beating crisis core. FF16 just made want to go and play more FF I loved that story i hope all the ones i try are just as captivating.

I disagree with you on the combat, if they wanted to take it so far from FF than why not call it something else, FF has always been a strategic game, so no elemental weaknesses makes no sense

16 is the only main-line entry outside of 9 (my personal favorite) that has captured and maintained my interest throughout.

For context, the others I’ve played are 4-8, 10, and 12. I know people hold up 6 as one of the best but I came to that one very late so that’s probably why it didn’t grab me the same way.

Loved the game, even with the pacing issues... Loathed the ending. Maybe intelectualy satisfying but no emotional payoff : a dark and gritty game with a dark and gritty ending, nothing for the characters you've been emotionaly invested in.

Still, great game.

I really enjoyed this game. yesterday My jaw completely dropped during the 2024 game awards because Clive will appear as a DLC guest character in Tekken 8 and face against the best of the best like Jin, Kazuya and many other challengers awaiting for him. Still I wanted Tifa though but oh well 😢 Regardless BEST EARLY CHRISTMAS PRESENT EVER

I just started this game but wish I played it sooner. I get there are some criticisms but this game is essentially the love child of Game of Thrones, Devil May Cry and Godzilla with the usual Final Fantasy charm. What’s there not to like?

My main problem is all the elements for a great game are there but they just arent used/finished. The story is good but if you dont take the time to read it in logs you wont know whats going on as it doesn't really unfold infront of your character. There is a crafting system that genuinely feels like it was added last minute. The world revolves around the magic of the crystals yet the magic you have access to is beyond basic. A handful of side quests are really good and help world build really well but you dont come across them organically. The villains are some of the worst points as you only get a small glimpse of what drives them with ultima being the worst.

I feel it's a missed opportunity to not make characters like Jill or Joshua* playable, or at least more engaging. It would've played better with the theme of working with others in XVI. This is where I will give points to XV.

*Yes, there are points in the fame you play as Joshua, but they are very few and arguably negligible.

Great video, despite the weaknesses of this game, it's a well polished game with gorgeous scenes, great characters, outstanding music, breathtaking boss fights, Bahamut being my favourite.
It's just a shame that they didn't give you the choice to play Final Fantasy mode from the beginning, which tags this game (for many but not for most) as an easy game with poor battle system.

The action is cool but it sucks the gameplay slows down so much after what was shown in the demo, which misses the point of it trying to be a Devil May Cry game with Final Fantasy characters.

It’s a fine game. Long time fans of the series are still waiting for one that is actually a Final Fantasy game. I just think they’ve been on the wrong track. People who want a heavy action cinema RPG, are going to play God of War. I’ll say this, at least 16 isn’t digging up the bones of its most popular game of all time to rip out everything fans love about it.

I actually really like the side quests for the most part. They add a lot of insight into the world and the characters that inhabit it. The writing for a vast majority of these quests I found to be top notch, and even brutally tragic at times. Might not be the most exciting thing gameplay wise, but I still found them compelling enough to keep me interested.

If the quests and dungeons had some more puzzle solving elements, something similar to God of War perhaps, then I think the game would truly be perfect in terms of an action RPG.

I think I'd really hope the NEXT Final Fantasy game incorporates the old job system so people like myself can play with different weapons and play styles. If I want to be a traditional Final Fantasy Dragoon, or Monk, or Black Mage, my only option is to play the MMO. But that game's combat doesn't hold a candle to single player games, especially this one's.

I don't think the ending is ambiguious at all:

Spoilers:

Joshua dies. Ultima dies and with him all magic.
Clive uses the last remnants of magic and it petrifies his hand, but you can see that it stops there (his arm right above is fine).
Jill sees the star disappearing because, magic disappeared as well, she think it means Clive died. Later she understands it's not true, hence her change from despair to hopeful.
The book called final fantasy is written by someone called Joshua, which we know is not possible because Joshua died and wasn't one of "the Final witnesses of said Fantasy". Which implies that Clive was the one who wrote it in the name of Joshua, since not only he's the one who memeably says the words Final Fantasy and actually was present for the story he's writting about.

FFXVI is by FAR the most amazing entry into the series, in my own honest opinion, for me anyway. That being said, I’d like to express a little bit of the “why” that is.
There aren’t too many games that have made me feel so many emotions, all while keeping my watery eyes glued to the screen, as I wait with bated breath, until I get platinumed that ish. Hahah! This game really is soo beautiful, heartwarming and touching, sorrowful and maddening, plus so much more. The one main qualm I had with it, is the side quests, sorrrta lackluster combat, and of course the ending. I wish they could’ve given us some sort of multiple endings or something? Hahah I suppose I’m asking too much. 🤣

Starting to watch this. Before I do, I'll just say I vastly preferred the battle system in the FF7R games, those games perfectly and brilliantly translated the turn-based ATB system into real-time (which filtered a bunch of people who wanted an action game), while XVI attempted an actual action game but to me lacked BOTH the systemic depth of an RPG and the tight execution depth of an action game like DMC5. To me XVI tried and failed to take a FF game into real-time, while FF7R beautifully succeeded even if it went so hard at that idea it got misunderstood by many players, with XVI trying for a more mass appeal but failing to execute on it.
That's my general take on the combat system without going deeper into it.

Clive is arguably the strongest character in all of FF series yhe only one whod rivals Lightning. Clive is also the best written character since Cain and Tidus.

Only things I didn't like in FF16 are main cities are not explorable and everything was convenient for Clive every eikon except Leviathan was around him

I have also played most ff games and I have to say I feel like 15 was actually a pretty deep story when you get into it. Altho told in a very unorthodox way across multiple media's only made it more confusing, when you actually put it all together from the story of the astrials to the tragedy of ardyn, and how it all came together I the end with him accomplishing his goal, and noctis story all playing out over all of that to me was one of the better stories, and ardyn was one of the best villains in the series. I found the brotherhood to be the weaker part of the game as it all felt alittle boy bandish to me.

Ain’t gonna lie, the last time I cried playing a game was around when FFX was released and I beat it. Still my favorite Final Fantasy story. But the ending hit me right in the heart I couldn’t help but cry. I was so invested in this story. My only gripe is they give it an M rating, but barely do anything with it. It wants to be like Game of Thrones (kinda) but without understanding why game of thrones hit so hard. It didn’t shy away from violence, when this game does.

My only major gripes with the game truth be told were the side quests and the ending which is more of a personal matter rather than an objective one. But being objective about things for the 50 hours I got out of the game I'd argue its an absolute kickass blast that lets you handle it almost any way that one could want with there only being one character, who plays like multiple different ones at the same time making your options feel almost endless when it comes to picking out Eikon abilities.

My main issue was just that I couldn't be bothered to go around and deal with all the small side quests that boiled down to "Ermm hey Clive, I need these dingleberries from this specific plant on the Dalmekian coast can you get them?" Wherein you just fast travel to the location or as close to it as you can, fight the handful of enemies it spawns for you, pick up the items, then return back to wherever the quest giver is and collect your reward. And this wouldn't be an issue.. if it wasn't every single side quest in the game with there only being a select few I actually liked like the one where you reunite with Ambrosia.

I will however say that the main story aside from one instance where they had you fast travelling around all of Valisthea to talk to people and do some small fights was absolutely amazing, from the music, the characters, the emotions, the motivations all of it comes together to make what is seriously one of the best action story games I've ever had the joy of playing. I literally just call the game "hell yeah" simulator because the Eikon battles are just that, you screaming hell yeah as you literally fight on the edge of space vs a dragon shooting literal death lasers at you.

I loved the story so much, which is most important to final fantasy imo. But ngl, that might be the only thing i do like. The gameplay is eh to me, its fun until its not tbh. I wish the performance was better, the game performs like dogsh*t on all platforms and just looks sooo blurry in motion. The lack of rpg aspects pisses me off, because its a new trend amongst existing franchises to strip rpg elements away. The fact Final Fantasy...THE rpg series is doing that in a mainline game is ret*rded, sorry.

Its a fairly good game, but its more evidence of Square Enix still not having a clue wtf they're doing

I don't care if you think they are FF or not. They are no RPG to me. And I want an RPG out of an FF. You want an action game. Okay cool for you but i don't care about that one tiny little bit. The FF franchise is on a path to remove the RPG part out of their main entries and I hate it with every fibre of my being. It's the Japanese equivalent of the Dragon Age franchise. Set to be some random generic action game where you kill god all the time except this time the spew pretentious BS at you. Never have I seen that before... /s.

This seem like a situation where the majority of final fantasy fans play the game at first and love it hence those initial positive reviews. Then all of the long time elitist fans take over the narrative surrounding the conversation of the game and run it into the ground because its not their favorite final fantasy rehashed again. The nature of final fantasy is constantly change, innovation and taking new directions, all while maintaining similar stories tropes and beats that are unique to the series.

Having played through pretty much all of the mainline games thus far besides FFXI, FFXVI has quickly become top 3 in the series for me personally.

The devs at CBU3 are huge fans of the series, especially the pixel era of Final Fantasy. One of my favorites was always FFIV, and I see a lot of references to that game in 16 among many other classic titles.

FFXVI may not be for everyone, but I’m very glad CBU3 gave us an FF that harkens back to a lot of classic FF vibes and themes while providing something new as well. Im looking forward to see what this team does next!
