Matt Flores, Wildlife Diversity Biologist and Southern Region Supervisor for the Nevada Dept of Wildlife will discuss NDOW's upcoming Bioblitz, to be held in May of 2024.
Matt explains, "The Gold Butte area is unique in that it is located at the confluence where several large desert ecosystems converge; the Mojave Desert, the Great Basin Desert and the Colorado Plateau. Gold Butte is the 'crossroads of the desert' in that it can contain species from each of these three ecosystems. Due to its remoteness Gold Butte is also under studied, and has potential to contain range expansions for species not yet observed in their range into Gold Butte.
For these reasons NDOW has partnered with the BLM to host a Bioblitz focused on the Gold Butte area with the hopes of getting as many eyes and ears out there to locate difficult to detect species. A Bioblitz is a gathering of individuals ranging from highly skilled professionals to folks that just want to get out with a purpose with the intent of identifying as many species in an area as possible. This can be especially useful when dealing with a species that has a low probability of being detected, by overwhelming them with a sheer numbers of eyes which can overcome their cryptic nature.
We hope to uncover some the obstacles associated with the Gold Butte area by hosting this bioblitz, in the hopes of gaining a better understanding of the landscape and the resources it holds."
