Starting a Peripheral IV Catheter

Wow this was great!!!

Wish all nursing videos were as brief yet informative as this one.

Be sure to tighten the hub on the j-loop to the catheter before putting the tegaderm on - if that hub isn't tightened enough, it could leak (especially during contrast exams)

It amazes me how this is such an essential skill in Emergency where I specialize, but I literally never once had to do this beforehand as a floor nurse because we had an IV nurse

I’m a nuclear medicine tech in clinic and I had to start one of these with little info. Blood leaked everywhere 😰 but this video is super helpful in pointing out my mistakes and how to move forward.

Why remove the tourniquet at that point? I was thinking let it stay on so a bunch of blood isn’t flowing through the newly placed catheter making a mess of things.

I get them but I just feel awkward while doing it like it's not smooth lol

1. Always advance needle 1-2mm at lower angle after you get flash
2. Don’t leave blood in your catheter
3. That dressing is ridiculous
4. Poor antiseptic technique
5. No locking the tubing? Cmon
6. Poor TQ placement
7. Poor site selection
8. Poor flushing technique, that line won’t last

I’m getting an IV on Wednesday and I want to know, does this hurt at all? And what gauge do they use for the needle. I have a huge fear of needles and I am really nervous for it.

Im a phlebotomist and the nurses always say how challenging it is like a phlebotomist. Ould never start an IV😂😂😂😂this is literally 3 extra steps to add on from what I am already doing

Great video, at school we learned that you're supposed to disinfect three times though. Once in a spiral motion like you showed. Then In a vertical motion and finally horizontal motion.
