The one thing why the girlfriend is scared of driving for the first time in America is the position of the driver's seat. In Australia and many other Commonwealth countries such as here in India, the driver's seat is located to the right and the vehicle runs on the left. In the US and most other countries, the driver's seat is on the left and the vehicle runs on the right side of the road. So the girl is scared because she knew that it's gonna take awhile (but not for long) to cope up with these.

I thought Australia drives on the same side of the road as America

Blinker stock is normally by the door so yes the right in "right hand" drive countries(Even if you would shift with the inside hand). They also normally use handbrakes and manual transmissions but Americans are lazy so autos. Even though every owners manual and drivers manual says to use it.

Also, you could get a right hand drive vehicle and she would feel more natural except the side of the road.
