There's like 2 visible muzzle flashes and a clear bunker poty coming from that hill and the tank didn't shoot them.

Peleliu was the first time the Japanese employed a long battle of attrition, foregoing Banzai charges (Though they still happened now and then) and made a tough fortress out of the coral hills with a network of tunnels. Naval gunfire and bombs didn't touch them. The Marines had to dig them out one by one, and even then, they often re-occupied the bunkers and caves via their tunnel system. General Rupertus naively thought they could take the island in 4 days. It took two months, and knocked the 1st Marine division out of the war for almost 6months, due to heavy casualties.

I remember rewatching band of brothers sometime after i had finished the Pacific and remembering them talking about redeploying the 101st. They saw so much fucked up shit in europe, but some of the stuff in the pacific was as bad or worse than conditions in ww1

Well…5 years after WWII, American soldiers would face Europe’s battle + Pacific Battle + WWI style Trench Battle + Siberian Winter War all mixed in one basket called Korean War.

the reason this show is hot garbage is how fast paced and idiotic it all is. noticed how in ww2 movies and mostly in pacific movies the soldiers always rush, charge, running into enemy fire like absolute morons? but in reality those campaigns took years to complete and soldiers were mostly in their positions because if they did were constantly advancing they would lose the war easly. this show is like a sci-fi spin off of the pacific war with how imaginary and absurd it is. its all because hollywood producers think that fast paced + explosions everywhere = good. of course you need to entretain the NPC cattle with overly heroic nonsense so there is that also. i swear call of duty world at war is even more realistic then this garbage show and call of duty games arnt realistic at all. medal of honor pacific assualt is another game that was way better then this garbage of a show

EB Sledge's description of the conditions on Okinawa from his memoir, "With the Old Breed at Peleliu and Okinawa":

"I had my first opportunity to look around our position. It was the most ghastly corner of hell I had ever witnessed. As far as I could see, an area that previously had been a low grassy valley with a picturesque stream meandering through it was a muddy, repulsive, open sore on the land. The place was choked with the putrefaction of death, decay, and destruction. In a shallow defilade to our right, between my gun pit and the railroad, lay about twenty dead Marines, each on a stretcher and covered to his ankles with a poncho - a commonplace, albeit tragic, scene to every veteran. Those bodies had been placed there to await transport to the rear for burial. At least those dead were covered from the torrents of rain that had made them miserable in life and from the swarms of flies that sought to hasten their decay. But as I looked about, I saw that other Marine dead couldn't be tended properly. The whole area was pocked with shell craters and churned up by explosions. Every crater was half full of water, and many of them held a Marine corpse. The bodies lay pathetically just as they had been killed, half submerged in muck and water, rusting weapons still in hand. Swarms of big files hovered about them."

"The mud was knee deep in some places, probably deeper in others if one dared venture there. For several feet around every corpse, maggots crawled about in the muck and then were washed away by the runoff of the rain. There wasn't a tree or bush left. All was open country. Shells had torn up the turf so completely that ground cover was nonexistent. The rain poured down on us as evening approached. The scene was nothing but mud; shell fire; flooded craters with their silent, pathetic, rotting occupants; knocked-out tanks and amtracs; and discarded equipment - utter desolation. The stench of death was overpowering. The only way I could bear the monstrous horror of it all was to look upward away from the earthly reality surrounding us, watch the leaden gray clouds go skudding over, and repeat over and over to myself that the situation was unreal - just a nightmare - that I would soon awake and find myself somewhere else. But the ever-present smell of death saturated my nostrils. It was there with every breath I took. I existed from moment to moment, sometimes thinking death would have been preferable. We were in the depths of the abyss, the ultimate horror of war. During the fighting around the Umurbrogol Pocket on Peleliu, I had been depressed by the wastage of human lives. But in the mud and driving rain before Shuri, we were surrounded by maggots and decay. Men struggled and fought and bled in an environment so degrading I believed we had been flung into hell's own cesspool."

Its insane how many men, vehicles artillery etc were packed im such a small area. The tenth army had over 180,000 combat troops in 7 divisions and other combat units. Crazy stuff, ww1 level. At one point the Americans had 4 divisions over a 9 km line, that's 2.25 km per division, or about 10 men per meter of we take an average of 22,000 men per division. Of course not all were on the Frontline, some were behind in reserve, but still.

The Pacific War in World War 2 was way way worse and more brutal than the Vietnam War. The Japanese soldiers are easily the toughest and bravest warriors the USA ever fought. The Germans on the western European front didn't have shit on these Imperials. It's why I'll admire them despite the atrocities and war crimes their regime committed. The Japanese being outnumbered, outgunned, and outmaneuvered fought against the USA who had technological superiority and they should be honored and respected for that. You can't control where you're born or how much propaganda gets indoctrinated into you. The Imperial Japanese soldiers and the soldiers of the other Axis powers and their allies deserve to be honored, there we both good and bad men forced or volunteered to fight in evil regimes they had no idea about but just tried doing their duty as soldiers.

Curiosity: are there any books or interviews from Sherman tank crews that served in the Pacific theater?

From what I know about tanks, the Sherman was superior in armour, mobility and firepower compared to most of the Japanese tanks.

In a way it was the the top dog in that theater, unlike in Europe.

Yet I think it might be interesting to hear what the crews experiences were, given the tougher terrain of the islands and what strategies the Japanese deployed to deal with these tanks.

I think what the taxi driver who drops Leckie home and John Basilones speech say it best about the two different fronts. The pacific was absolute hell, the Germans were formidable and a terrifying enemy to face. But facing the Japanese an enemy who have to use anything to win a position from due to how unshakable the Japanese were.

I think there should be more Pacific Theater movies and series because these people went through hell on Earth. I mean, remember their R&R? They all were eating shit in Pavuvu while the R&R for Winters in Band Of Brothers was a week in Paris. Now the battles, far more brutal than the battles the US fought on the Western Front.

My great-uncle, Tommy, fought with the ‘ stay - behind ‘ forces in East Timor ( Australian and Dutch, mainly ) until being captured and interned ( I won’t horrify anyone with the details of what he both experienced and witnesses
at Japanese hands ), and Grandpa fought in the AIF in Greece, Crete, and Syria, prior to being shipped to New Guinea. Neither of them ever told me a thing of what they went through. Only their wives did. Privately. Furtively. And it sounded almost entirely like this footage. But worse. I do know that Grandpa was extremely fixated upon the notion that his youngest son ( my Dad ) would NOT, under any circumstances , be serving in Vietnam ( Australia had conscription for the Vietnam War until 1972 ).
I remember in summer we’d catch glimpses of Uncle Tommy’s back. It had welts and masses of scars across it. I said nothing, guessing what it resulted from. My cousins were usually less circumspect. He used to laugh and say that it was the result of when he “ fell off his bicycle “ as a child.
