And this is why my whip is a Smart Fortwo... Although illegal you could probably park it European style on that street and I have on occasion just to prove a point. I love my car and I'm not a small dude either... 5' 10", 250 with half Scottish, half English-German roots so you know... Size is an issue for a half-ginger fat bastard like myself! Depending on where you live, you can use a tent to save your parking spot.
Just fold it up and toss it in the trunk when you get home.

I also do this with my golf mk3 and my other golf mk3 vr6. But I always park them with the engines still running because I hate getting in a cold car. Gasoline is cheap anyways and I only park for 12 hours max so I don't burn through a full tank

This can only happen in USA or Canada where there are lot of huge cars. In Europe (I am from Madrid) your strategy will simply not work. Almost everyday you will have motorbikes and small cars parked in this spaces.

My new neighbour across the street tried to take my space since they moved here, it's very annoying especially they already have space in front of their house, including two driveways! They have big cargo van, Jeep, pickup truck...their friends visit them almost every day, sleepover quite often, and those friends have big vehicles too, it's crazy! Recently, I'm looking for a second car to take that space back, so I don't have to worry about space taken when I'm not home. My good neighbour next to my door has been doing this for a year, now with my second new car, we could work together just like you and your neighbour. I will also line up certain tree branch to park precisely like you with the pole. It's our right to protect the parking space💪💪💪, especially I have been living here for more than 20 years, deserve some kind of respect. We have street sweeper in Canada too, but it comes irregularly, so I just sweep the street between me and my neighbours by myself weekly, with blower, broom and dustpan, I have been cleaning the roadside for more than 16 years.

A hassle, yes. But no laws being broken. It’s pretty smart. People do what they have to do in their situation. To the complainers I would say, this guy has no less right to these parking spaces than anybody else.
