Which is harder K2 or Everest? see the video until the end to know why?
K2, the world's second-highest mountain, located at the Pakistan-China border in the Karakorum Himalayan Range. Mount Everest is the highest mountain, located in Nepal and China border in the Mahalangur Himalayan range and climbed every season by climbers. Mount K2 was never climbed in winter before Jan 16th, 2021 the historic day, Nepal made history and 10 climbers from Nepal summitted together for the very first time.
Let’s start talking about these 2 countries Nepal and Pakistan. It’s not only K2 is harder and more technical to climb than Everest, even getting in to Pakistan is much harder than getting into Nepal because of the visa process and all the logistics.
Trekking to K2 base camp involves walking over the glacier for few days which makes it really tough and there are not any facilities along the trek, you have to carry all the stuff and do camping along the trek from the very first day. Trekking to Everest base camp is luxury, walking along with the dirt trail and sleeping in the guest house and eating in restaurants, much comfortable and easy walk, admiring the panoramic views of the Himalayas.
Mount K2 is shaped like a triangle, which means of course it will be difficult to climb. From the base camp to the summit, it is steep climbing. But mount Everest has more zig zag and twist and turns with a less steep climb.
On the k2 climb, from the base camp to the summit every step is technical. It’s more of mixed rock ice climb and alpine climb but on Everest climb, crossing Khumbu glacier and well-known Hillary steps are technical also most of the climb is well laid out because of a lot of people climbing every year following fixed rope by Sherpa guide and you will get the support of your guide on every step.
K2 is situated farther north than Everest, making for extremely foul weather that’s highly unpredictable. You really never know what you will face, so you can’t count on silence in the weather giving you the window you need to reach the summit and get back to safety. Avalanches are also much more common on K2 than on Everest. For this reason, a successful summit on K2 is much less than Everest
There are less than 400 people who have summited the mt k2 whereas there has been more than 9200 successful summit climb by around 5300 people.
In comparison, the death rate of K2 is 25 percent whereas Mount Everest is 4 percent only.
So in the conclusion, K2 is a tougher climb than Everest. Because of the lack of Sherpas, support, fixed ropes, more unpredictable weather, avalanches, the technicality, steepness, and the logistics of the climb.
