In this video, you will join me along an exciting eurovelo 8 bikepacking trip as...
I arrived in Monte Carlo by train, feeling down because my brompton lost a rear rack wheel. I worried I couldn't use it as a trolley for my groceries. But with some force, I managed to fit the wheel back, even though it was wobbly.
Then while looking around Monte Carlo, the first thing I noticed was the luxury cars. They were everywhere. Then, the hills caught my attention. They were steeper than any mountain I'd climbed, and the traffic made it worse.
Later walking through the shopping avenue in Monaco, I felt out of place. Each shop had its own security guard, and the people looked like they stepped out of a magazine.
I also visited the famous casino from the James Bond movie "Casino Royale." It was surrounded by luxury sports cars and people admiring them.
By 8 pm, I had no idea where I would sleep. I cycled to the outskirts of Monte Carlo, looking for a quiet residential area, but there were cameras everywhere.
At 9 pm, I spotted a potential camping spot at the edge of a cliff but missed it while going downhill too fast.
I checked the beach for a secluded spot but found a loud house music club instead.
Finally, at 10 pm, I found a square and accidentally discovered a public toilet behind the local tourist office. It was secluded, off-limits, and unlocked. I decided to stealth camp there, hoping no one would need the toilet overnight.
The toilet was spacious enough for me to lay down with my Brompton and camping gear. It lacked ventilation, but I was willing to risk it for a few hours of sleep before biking to Nice the next day. More on that adventure in the next episode.
