I did see a fair amount of people giving way, or pulling back, some even seemed too polite....

Surfed there in the late 70’s and it was mellow back then. Homes still on the beach, the lifeguard came out and caught a few waves with us. He was a tanned leathery dude, old school waterman. A mute Rasta hippie came up to us offering fruit. Totally different look and vibe to it now.
