RP color is very poor, from the RAW to LCD and viewfinder, it is very very desaturated, also shadow recovery is terrible, I shooted underexposure once, had to throw all the raws

i have an rp and i left it in it's bag for more than 3 weeks without touching it and the battery was full when i opened it.

if your batteries discharge it's because you don't do use them properly

About the battery dropping the charge overnight: I have the M50 mark II, which is the APS-C little brother of the RP, and it has the same issue! The battery drops quite a bit of charge overnight. I never measured how much exactly, but the drop is enough that the camera dies on me when I am making videos for my channel, versus having enough charge for the videos when I use a freshly charged battery. Briefly, it's a nuisance. Especially as the battery compartment can be accessed only when I remove the camera from the mount.... likely similar scenario for the small RP body as well. On the other hand the 5D classic battery lasts ages. I can leave it in the bag for half a year, and it's still ready to go for ever. Once I had a battery left untouched for 6 years, and it still had plenty of juice.... : ( )

We are cherry picking a bit anyway: I have both a 4000k shutter release 5Dmkll and an RP and love both. The 5D has those "Wow" moments, when the light is right, but sometime I find the RP to be more "polite" about color rendering.
The only thing I don't quite like completely in Canon are the Greens which always seem always a bit Yellowish.
The sky on the other hand is outstanding: I call it Canon Blue and really you can't find those colours anywhere else. The 5Dmkll has it more, the RP has it but slightly muted. No camera has ever ever matched the 450D sky tones through: those sky and clouds pictures were work of art, straight out of camera! I wonder why that sensor was dropped after just one iteration and I didn't like the 500D a bit.
I will add that the 5DMkII sees colours the RP do not: I was testing some blues with a tint of green in them, the 5D somehow was able to make the tint distinguishable, but the RP was just changing them to straight blue, completely another colour form what I was able to see. Panasonic, Olympus and Nikon also was butchering the tint in the same way as the RP: Initially I was thinking of lack of Bit, 8 vs 12-14, but the 5D can see the difference and has an even older sensor.

I just bought a 6d mk II (to flip it) and I already have the 6d i (and the 5di and 5dii) and the 6dii is just not the same. It is disappointing. The colors don't look the same and I would not recommend anyone to but the 6dii. but the 6d mk I. it has very nice colors.

Can someone confirm the fast self-discharge of the canon RP Batteries? Like 10% overnight sound like a lot. That would mean empty after week of storage.
This is very against what LI-Ion batteries can do.

WOW! Thank you so much for bringing this to attention. I have been saying this for years, in fact ever since the 5DSR generation which I believe is the last Canon breed with good "canon colors" as we know (or knew) them. When I first got the 5D MK4 I was really upset with the colors. Dull, cold and simply...not Canon. No matter how much I tried I never got them to fly. And since then I have been waiting for Canon to reverse-engineer their own oldschool color process. So far I see no evidence of any progress what-so-ever. Files are clinical and...meh! Need lots of work and they usually don't end up where I want them. I need LUTs for that and still not close. Clearly I am not a colorist nor is that my intention.

People tend to say "it's digital, get any colors you want" but miss the fact that sensor design, filters and the CFA make a HUGE difference, especially in RAW files. Ironically the same people think color science is only for JPEG.

i use the EOS R in the same way you describe the RP. i believe the color tones on the EOS R are very close to the 5D4, maybe not as "creamy yellow" as you have described in this and other 6D YT vids, but to my eye, it's a wee bit more brilliant than the RP. thanks for your effort and sharing. i have just subscribed to your YT channel. thumbs up.

Just found this. Tbh I have a 6d mk1 now. I came from a 750. It is a great camera. But including the grip it’s heavy. I do a lot of portraits and model shoots. On location etc. So I need something that performs and is not that heavy. Mainly shooting with my 85mm and 40mm. So I’m kinda leaning towards the rp. Although I love my 6d

As an old film guy focus and recompose was SOP. I still find I do that more than anything. I have come to really like the AF on my 80D, but I still have no problem going right back to the old school on the 6D. I've commented on enough of your videos so it's no surprise I am a big 6D fanboy. It's just a hell of a workhorse of a camera with lovely images and an ISO beast. It's a very usable camera. Looking at various R series I would have to step up to a higher model to replace the 6D and I don't do enough anymore to justify changing EOS to R. And I do appreciate the battery life of the 6D. Not knocking the RP as it seems a good little camera. It's just hard to find something that makes it truly worth spending bigger money when the gear I have is so capable. Glad to see you are still making videos that give usable information for the various levels of photographers.

(disclaimer: I'm a hobbyist) 6D was my 'studio' and 'astro' body from the second year it was available in Canada. I replaced the 'studio' part with a used 5DSr last year.
A used 6D with low shutter count is beyond cheap at the moment. What the camera will do is only limited by the finger pressing the shutter.

Trying to decide between these very two cameras, thanks for making the video! Determined to go full frame. The 6D is very tempting due to it’s low price ($250 USD). As an amateur that wants to improve, coming from a Sony Nex 5t (mirrorless)… I’ve become accustomed to seeing the exposure before taking photos. I’d like to learn the exposure triangle better and the thought of getting such beautiful images straight out of the 6D, breath taking. But I’m hard pressed to give up that exposure preview. It’s nice to push the shutter with confidence! Going to use this camera for family photos/video and tempted to jump into some real estate photography and perhaps help with an occasional wedding or event. At the current price point for the 6D I can pick up a decent lens, less that lens with the RP (used $600 USD). Might have to stick with the kit + nifty fifty for a while haha. I’m still pinching myself that full frame is even in this price range. But just enough of a gap here to make this difficult. Any advice?

Currently own Canon 6D Mark I and Sigma 50mm f 1.4 and thinking about going for Canon RP + CANON RF 50MM F1.8 ST. I do assignments. Why change? The one and only reason right now is that it would be so much easier to take the camera with me while traveling. But I'd still use that same camera for paid assignments too. Maybe would get the Canon 50mm 1.2 later.

I agree with a lot of what you say. Ive used an 80D with all of my events, with sigma 17 to 50 2.8, because it gets the job done and ita easier, lighter and cheeper..... BUT.....

As Ive been occasionally integrating the 6D in to my work flow, Ive noticed the photos, colors, contrast, skin tones, etc...Come out so perfect and nice right of camara, that I dont even know how to edit them.
I get scared and think about not including them in the final seleccion because of possible issues with clients, because of how much nicer the look.

The thing is .... I take from 6 to 10 hours editing events from an 80D, but take little to no effort editing 6D photos... All I would have to do is get better at changing lenses fast and using the 80D on zoom ranges my 6D lacks at the moment because I work with only three full frame prime lenses.

So if making it a bit difficult in those two hours of event, could help me sava 6 to 8 hours of editing, that would definitely be worth it.

I only thin this would be true about photography with humana, because of the skin tone issue. Others types like realstate are probably not worth it .

Thank You for the video. Very informative :)

I have the RP andI agree it’s easy to use. I also have the 5diii and a 6d. For some reason my version of the 6d is a bit less sharp than the 5diii. I’m not sure if it’s the “creamy” quality of the 6d. I have yet to get a second 6d next week so I will compare that new unit to my 5diii. I have to say though that the handling and feel of both 5diii and 6d are so much better than the RP! I also like that I do not have to worry about changing the battery that much compared to the RP. Between RP and 5diii, the color of 5diii is much better. Between 5diii and 6d, I’m not sure yet as I think there is a ‘veil’ of some blurriness on my 6d that affects the overall impression of the photos.

I believe I'm not the first to point out that... 6D has 11 AF points , so it is "advanced" compared to 5D\5DII\550D and others... while it matters not, BC the really usable is the centre one. And I confirm it is fantastic, especially in low-light. I own 6DII and not sure the centre point is as sensitive as on 6D (but compensated with all 45 being cross-type (with few f/8-capable in the middle) + vast DPAF capabilities in LV). When I got 6D for review (it was my second full frame after 5D Classic) I was amazed by centre point AF and high ISO performance + normal Auto-ISO (unlike, say, weirdy 5DII). For the price 6D is great and feels much better in hands than RP. Not mentioning bigger battery, better ergonomics, enormous lens variety without adapters and no freaking EVF lag during shooting (BC it's got flawless OVF)... Sure, if you need video with DPAF, flip-out screen, clean HDMI, EYE-AF and stuff... RP is your choice. It is also good for the price.

Really good video. A friend of mine recently posted a question on Facebook asking should he upgrade his Canon 6D to a Fujifilm XT2? My question to him was what is your Canon 6D not doing for you that the XT2 would he really couldn't answer the question, so then I asked him are you chasing gear? Then he said that he wanted a better auto focus system. I quickly responded, well. You ain't going to get that with the XT2. Then we talked about using just the center point focus on a 6D and recompose. It amazes me how many people do not realize this simple and old technique. I suggested to him if autofocus was his main goal, then the RP would be a better value but at the end of the day the 6d center point focus gets the job done. He then responded well. I went to the camera store and they talked me out of the rp and suggested the R5. I just rolled my eyes. He wanted to keep it under $1,000. Then they tell them the RP is no good in that the R5 is the way to go. Pretty sad if you ask me. Then they tried getting them into a used XT2 with a kit lens for $1,000 lol. So I went to his house and brought with me and XT2 and the 60 mm macro and we did a session together. Needless to say, he is sticking with the 6d and was glad he didn't bite on the XT2. This is not to say the XT2 is a bad camera, it's just a different camera and did not align with his needs compared to the 6d. In conclusion, this is what I like about your videos. You break things down in such a way that you potentially save people thousands of dollars.

Great review Martin. Like many, I've also had both cameras and have the RP now. The RP wins for me for all the reasons you mentioned, mainly being a better "all rounder". I also thought I was losing my mind because the Canon battery in the RP keeps losing charge even when the camera is turned off. Thanks for explaining that this is just "how it is" with the RP, I'll stop worrying about it and will just keep topping it up.

Martin, I couldn't agree more with your findings. That is why the 6D should be called the 6D Classic as a worthy successor of the 5D mark 1...
It deserves that seal of approval because the files have great IQ but also "personality".  As a side note, the output from the 6D is basically identical to the R6 in my casual tests, nobody could tell the difference in real-world situations, as you said DXO charts are useless.

The RP, well, I love mine because makes the job of taking product shots of my wife's jewelry business super easy, the files look sharp and colorful, and the client (my wife) is happy, so do I! But I know the output looks kind of generic and it is more difficult to fine-tune the RAW files than the 5D/6D ones.

By the way, I bought 4 Artman spare batteries and they work great and last quite a bit, only downside is they don't show the % remaining, says full all the time until they simply die.

Cheers!

6d was my first real camera. I still love those files. It seems that canon colors went “off” when they started trying to make cameras into video cameras. Just my take. I seriously think the 1dx that can be had for under 1k…and the 5dsr is the biggest budget powerhouse combo you can get and for less than a single R6 or R5. Can cover sports or stills easily.

I sold my RP and bought a 6D. 2nd time with the 6D. Great colors, fun to use BUT the moment you put it on a tripod, you miss the RP. And seeing exposure before you shoot is also a plus on the RP. Using the 6D is a little more difficult and takes more thought and attention. If I did events all the time, I would want a more sophisticated focus system than the 6D’s. Maybe the 6Dii. Not so much the RP because controlling the focus point was one of my biggest issues. Maybe an R (has a joystick as far as I recall).
