My husband is 80 and still had a set of pan paints from his school days - so about 70 years old and completely dried up. (They are Page London). I recently started spraying them with water to loosen them up and in fact they are now usable. I'm amazed! Glad they didn't get thrown away. (Love your videos.)

this was fun, informative, and yes, cautionary, I have a tendency to collect things silly things salt and pepper shakers, a particular brand of blown glass Christmas ornaments, not Radko, but similar, and until THE 1989 earthquake in the SF Bay area, teapots with the matching cream and sugars if available,, the florist put different arrangements in them and they looked amazing on all the tables at my first wedding [it was very small, 40 people], in my parents backyard, when I was a teenager it was pin back buttons, mostly political, but some with snarky sayings or jokes

I have the fan pallet you call the cell phone, the Superior 60 count in mint green. It cracked do much that I finally put them in quarter pans and shared with a few friends.

I do have a question, not sure if it was this video or one of the other ones I've seen. I saw you mentioning the Sennelier La Petite came damaged. I've had to replace mine twice, Amazon order, and they are still coming damaged. 20/24 of the halfpans are out. If I keep the next one they send do you know which, if any, half pans fit in the pallet?
Thanks in advance.

2.5 days later, I got through this video!!! Lol, and I loved it! Trying to figure out how I'm going to justify cost to the wife!!! Watercolor is like buying gold!!! Even empty tins can be pricey! Now I understand the wife's plea to pick only two hobbies. I'm looking at having to drop skating, to become a full-time artist. I already dropped music, so I no longer have instrument up keep costs. The things we allow ourselves to justify cost... I still have photography and skating cost. However, photography can rollover into my painting... Skating... It's very freeing, since I no longer travel. I was just looking at a group of friends that host skate traveling meet ups... If they'd only asked me 20 years ago... Then, I'd probably never had met my wife, or purchased my homes. Cause I'd be so in debt racking up cost on traveling.

I love the color, but it's just a little too bright. I have Quin Rose and Quin Pink, but neither is quite the right shade to blend with it.

I missed bits of this palette review here and there due to life, but appreciated the information I was able to glean from it. I'll probably go back again at some point and rewatch to see what I missed. I did want to say however that you should never feel guilty for your collection. You use your paints. You do reviews, you advise others based on your experience with different paints etc. Geez I mean you are an artist. You seem to be a very frugal person in other aspects of your life, so don't beat yourself up and don't let others do so either. If you get hateful comments, screw them, some people are just miserable people. Enjoy all you want for as long as you enjoy them or think you'll find a use for them and never get rid of them until you want to. Don't let mean spirited people rob you of your job. Thanks for sharing!

This was a great watch! Sadly, I bought another palette IN THE MIDDLE of the video! And it wasn’t even one you featured! Nor was it a brand I know! It does have a sweet little tin palette and some good looking standard colours. What sealed the deal was a long, detailed, intelligent, specific, even-handed review, with images including swatch with pigment numbers and lightfast ratings, plus 3 paintings. When I clicked on your video I felt I could safely watch. I mean, I KNEW I really did NOT need, and cannot really afford, another palette! Huh!

By the by, I think you might change your impression of the Art Philosophy (Mungyo) paint if you had the Terrain palette. ;0). It was my first and got me very excited. The palettes are underwhelming, it’s true, and I should know because I bought 3 more. lol. I have discovered that the ease with which they lift can be used to my advantage in abstracts as I can lift large areas even days after they were painted.

Anyway, thanks for a terrific video, and it looks like my addiction is still active ;0)

Love this tour of your palettes. I collect palettes too, but I figure I don’t go on holiday, or have other expensive habits, so we all do something to bring a little joy right? As an artist I get curious about other brands because paint making is an art. And like you say, they can always be used by someone if I don’t use them all. I would just say for your viewers new to artist grade paints in the UK Winsor & Newton will be the most economical paints to buy since we left Europe. Some stores have very good deals on them in the sets of 18 & 24. To give them their due they work at every level and are balanced. Not as exciting as the offerings from Daniel Smith but then DS is very expensive here. Another paint maker gaining traction here is Jackmans, beautifully crafted paint for the artist, and their repertoire is expanding. I’m itching to try them!

Interesting to see that all your Grumbacher Academy dried up, just like the one I bought a couple years ago. I have some from 35 years ago that I bought at my college bookstore when I first used "real" watercolors. The pigments were terrible back then! But they dry in the pan so glossy and rewet so well, they must have been full of wetting agent. They pan up beautifully and the earth tones are still useable.

Finally catching up with some of this massive video. Cracking up and 100% agreeing with your lightly salted comments on Daniel Smith. They were my first paint brand and local to me, but I don't buy them any more unless there's a special reason because they are, as you say, "sketchy as heck" about the Primateks.

Ahhh I do love that you are an avid collector. It makes me feel better about my own obsession. They are just so …. Pretty and so fun to play with. I have everything from crappy pallets that I still love to high end things. The first time I tried a professional pallet , I couldn’t even believe it. I was so used to digging to get enough color. The professional lines you barely needed to touch at all to get intense color. Not only do I collect watercolor palates but I am also a paper addict. I feel like you can never have too much paper. I spend all of my extra money on art supplies. I don’t go to restaurants or movies or buy clothes or coffee out or anything else. Art is the one area I let myself spoil myself. I also spoil my senior pup. She can have the best everything she wants as well. Art and my puppy. That’s all I really need in life. Art supplies is much cheaper than therapy. That’s how I look at it. 💙🦋

I bought one of those fan palettes years ago when they were advertised everywhere online. I barely used it until recently and I was surprised at how good the paints were. I haven’t experienced any cracking of the paints at all. I think I paid about $15 for it. I’m so happy you referenced them in your video!

I absolutely loved watching this video. Gives me many ideas on making travel sets. I already have the Jerry q, clover style palette, and an empty koi palette to fill. I also like 1/4 pans to add to pans with extra space, I just have to add magnets to keep them in the palette. I would prefer to have the marker packaging that you used.
