The lesson from Bismark, if I’m not mistaken, is that in any enterprise you should be careful not to overextend yourself. Leaders are so often tempted by the idea of taking more, but in taking more, by twist of fate or something else it always ends up working against them, sometimes catastrophically backfiring , so you should always try to take only your fair share and perhaps a little more for strategic purposes, but that is all.

Sir I think we missed one strategy of Bismarck back in 1863 poles had revolted against Russia and so it was Bismarck who had helped Russia in suppression of that revolt and this was the reason for Russia siding with Prussia in 1864,1866and 1870-71

The details of the Schleswig Holstein war are actually very interesting. Bismarck was a Master of manipulating his political opponents into making some mistake that justified Bismarcks wars in the eyes of the rest of the European powers

this man's evil shadow influenced the rest of German history...he inspired others in German history to commit evil crimes...they were all the same..Von Ludendorf, Hitler, the last King...and even Helmut Kohl come in that legacy...gangsterism,,,This has cost Germany terribly in its history,, Werner Fassbinder explains it far better

What a lot of people don’t understand is that the 2 other liberals sided with ACB in order to limit the final ruling.

It’s absolutely brutal, it sucks 100%, but you will see more of this. The same 2 siding with ACB or Kavanaugh in order to limit the devastation from an Alito/Thomas decision.

Welcome back to the Lochner era baby!!!! We’re all doomed.

I sometimes wonder if he’d regret his antisemtic speeches if he could have seen what that sentiment eventually did to the continent and Germany when fully enacted upon. The Nazis destroyed and tainted forests in their own fatherland to exterminate a single group, with a few others here and there. And they were so horrific that the term ‘human rights’ was coined internationally.😔

On a side note, it’s amazing how damn accurate his predictions about the German Empire and the ‘the great war of Europe’. The time frames he predicted as well were also scarily accurate.😳👍

I do believe you skipped over a few details towards the end that really goes to show the more brash and arrogant side to Bismarck. I recalled you had explained in the Franco-Prussian war video (which I don’t know if this video came out before this.) that Bismarck had wanted the Elsass-Lothringen he first just wanted that and nothing more when the French refused he returned to Wilhelm and asked to siege Paris until they agreed. However he wasn’t without his critics as one of the people who was against forcefully taking the region was Prussian later German Field Marshal Helmuth Karl Bernard Graf von Moltke the man who over saw all three of the wars that made Germany. Moltke was admitted that taking the region was going to far and it would only lead to permanent poor relations with France, but Wilhelm agreed with Bismarck and on September 17th 1870 the Siege of Paris began. There was also the fact that the reason Kaiser Wilhelm I didn’t want to be called Kaiser was that by all rights it was an empty title, but Bismarck was admitted about this and threw one of his tantrums and Wilhelm agreed as always. Then there was the reason why Wilhelm II let go of Bismarck and wasn’t because he thought he could do it better. By the time he ascended to the throne Bismarck was becoming senile and his anti-catholic anti-socialist policies weren’t exactly giving Wilhelm confidence. When a miner strike broke out during the start of his reign Bismarck’s brilliant idea was to send in the army and make them stop striking, but Wilhelm refused do so wanting to hear their grievances and actually improve the working conditions and lives. Bismarck also wanted to basically arrest socialists and confiscate their property which again Wilhelm disagreed with, but this event had been the last straw and when Bismarck threatened to quit like he did with his grandfather Wilhelm II allowed it showing Bismarck that it wasn’t going to work this time. I cannot deny that Bismarck was a brilliant political strategist and made Germany, but we cannot keep treating him like this infallible leader that made Germany until stupid Willy blow it up. Much of what sewed the seeds of the Great War happened because of Bismarck and we can’t just ignore it.

Bismarck was only “great” if your definition of greatness doesn’t include any morality. Bismarck was “great” in the same sense that US President James Polk was “great”. I mean, somehow I think the government of Mexico might hesitate before calling James Polk “great”. The same goes for Napoleon (the First), for that matter. The (non-French) victims of his endless wars would never want to call him “great”.
