It's because Disney has a registered trademark on the whistling part. That is why so many videos are getting copyright claimed.

I hate to tell you this but ONLY the original film is public domain. Copies of that may be distributed. Mickey Mouse is still a TRADEMARK, it is also copyright protected. In addition, any remakes, re-issues (eg: dvd format), enhanced... that Disney have made of the film are ALL STILL UNDER COPYRIGHT. So unless you have the original film, you are out of luck.

You cant call it a "Mickey Mouse" cartoon bc Disney still owns him as a character. Steamboat Willie is for the purposes of this copyright law, its own character (even though its literally just a variant of mickey). If you want to make a Steamboat Willie cartoon, just call it Steamboat Willie and get rid of all mention that its "Mickey Mouse."

disney can claim the music, as copyright for songs lasts for the creators lifetime + 70 years, unlike characters and footage which is 70 years, (somehow mickey lasted 95)

I think I know why, the background music is copyrighted and maybe Disney re liscenced it in 1999 since the music can be in public domain after 70 years after the author but Disney didn’t die yet and they will never die (Just because Walt and Roy died doesn’t mean it’s in public domain)

I heard that while they don't own the copyright to steamboat willie, the audio wasn't added in until a year later. They came still legally claim the audio for another year.

Even though Steamboat Willie is currently in the public domain, it is still technically a trademarked product of Disney. I think that they should have renewed their copyright of the character instead of just letting it expire.

They haven't worked out yet that it was their own insanely defensive attitude to the copyright that caused all this. This is just going to make people even more determined to turn "Mickey Mouse" into a name synonymous with the most degraded and maddening crap the internet can muster.

They're losing money after their crappy Disney remakes and other junk. So of course they're doing everything they can to get more money. I'm not surprised.
