On May 5, 2022, I was fortunate to interview my friend and coach, Steven Munatones. Steven is an accomplished open water swimmer and has done a great deal to popularize the sport in venues worldwide, including the Summer Olympic Games.

Steven is also a published author, Harvard graduate, member of the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame and CEO of KAATSU Global (www.kaatsu.com).

On April 30, Steven won the annual SCAR swim series in Arizona consisting of four swims: a swim across Lake Saguaro - - a distance of 9.5 miles; a swim across Lake Canyon - - a distance of 9 miles; a swim across Lake Apache - - a distance of 17 miles; and a swim across Lake Roosevelt - - a distance of 6.2 miles.

Our discussions in this interview focused on the challenges swimmers encountered in this competition (strong currents, wind, desert heat, cold & choppy water, long distances, night swim darkness, cumulative fatigue, lack of sleep, etc.) and the meticulous steps and intense training required of Steven to prepare.

Steven also shared reflections on how this swimming event and athletics in general offer life lessons for all people, regardless of their backgrounds and interests.

My many thanks to Steven for taking the time to do this interview about his recent victory.
