It is called the Asian Squat because mostly people from Asia or the Shemite territory do it, and some Africans too. Shem maintained his pure human blood, unlike his brothers Japhet (west/europeans) and Ham(africans) who intermarried with the bloodline(DNA) of Cain (serpent's son). Thus, their hamstring or leg muscles became short because of the curse to the serpent. This may seem crazy, but it's a fact. Google Cain in Europe!

I can do an Asian squat but my heals lift off the ground. I can stay in this position for a long time but I am not stable because my feet are not flat on the ground.

Have you heard anyone say, "Mom please do not squat"!! Why? Having the ability to squat is the best exercise in the world. A lifetime of sitting is the cause of muscles to atrophy. Stretch everyday.

Good video--thanks. Have been working on my Asian Squat for six months with good results. I can hold it relaxed and stable for several minutes, though it eventually becomes uncomfortable. I can now drop into it anytime without preliminary stretching. Also, I've found when stretching, I reach maximal extensions far more quickly and easily now.

Your "back parallel to floor" stretch is wonderful for quick relief of back stiffness and soreness. Wish I'd learned that one years ago.

We used to use this type of squat some decades ago in my part of Europe. People used to wait busses, while resting on that position. We have never even called it Asian either, it has another nickname. However it seems to have become embarrassing over time.

I am from America, now living in China as a Kindergarten teacher for the last 5 years. One day I woke up and realized I can do this squat thanks to my 3-year olds...always squatting down to talk to them and picking them up and sitting in the short chairs. It's incredible.

As soon as I get my ankle out of the cast--I'm going to start working on this!
I'm 68, and am distressed and humiliated by the difficulty that I have nowadays getting in and out of canoes and kayaks!
I distinctly remember being able to sit cross legged on the ground and rise easily and gracefully up to a standing position before uncrossing my legs. I don't need to be able to do that again--but accomplishing the Asian squat would be a huge boon!

Hi, thanks for all your great tips and information. I just wanted to ask a quick question. I can get into this position and stay there, but I find it only works if I have about a 1/2 inch board to rest my heels on. Is this okay until I improve doing it without using the board?

Western gal here, just gave it a go. Did pretty well, I just need better posture in my upper back/shoulders.

I have something of an advantage though as I did fencing to a high-level in my youth, did a lot for lowerbody strength/flexibility

I was honestly extremely surprised I can easily do this immediately and I am a 52 year old female with 2 major back surgeries (1st in early 30's & 2nd in my 40's).
I watched your video 2 days ago and immediately tried it and can go all the way down and stand straight up with no extra assistance for 10 reps easy.
I don't work out at the gym anymore and work 40 hours a week in a office.....so again I am pleasantly surprised I can do this move and go all the way down and back up several times without grabbing on for help!!!
Now it's my favorite exercise!

bla bla .. ethnic background .. erm huh? every child uses this position.

We (all ethnics) just unlearn this over time, cause of all the chair, seats etc. muscles shorten if they are not needed.
So if repeated regulary .. guess what?
