I played civ IV a lot at some point, infinite builders that you could just set to upgrade automaticaly were fun, but I have to say that I like civ VI more. I don't even have a way to run my civ IV disc if it even works at this point.

There's one sole reason why is Civ 4 is the best Civilization game. Caveman2Cosmos mod. Vanilla Civ 4 is nothing special, modern Civ games are better, but Caveman2Cosmos Civ 4 is one of the best 4x games ever made

Grew up playing this game, love it to death. Nowadays id say its probably one of the weaker entries after having tried civ 2 and alpha centauri. Later civs add so much pointless window dressing and endless dlc

As someone who loves Civ IV, but despises Baba Yetu, I cannot describe the rage I almost flew into upon hearing this intro.

I tried 5, played a couple of games of 6, uninstalled both and haven't looked back. Still have 4 on my PC.
Still remeber playing civ 1 as a kid, with only rudimentary understanding of english. I loved tech so much, I never raised taxes above 10%. Which led to me having to sell a lot of my buildings to pay for my empire.

Did you ever play civ4 Legends of revolution. They (civ fanatics) reprogrammed the base computer. Created Ruthless AI that plays to win, really tough. Rebanced the entire game.

Stacking units is not a flaw... A stack of doom is much easier to manage than a carpet of doom.

You know what I miss in Civ 4? Being able to queue tasks for your workers. That was really nice. Not to mention once you were done building your fat crosses, there was a completely separate button for building a trade network. No worrying about the workers building over previous improvements until and unless I wanted them to.

The maps were 3 times bigger, you could stack units building a massive navy or army, it allows 18 player slots.

it was the soundtrack for me. also the scenarios (ww2 north africa, american revolution) that came with the game as well as the mods. i liked a lot of the unique units a lot. I like civ vi though. i'm still trying to figure out the in-game politics since I don't play the game that often anymore. civ 4 was definitely my weekend/late night go to high school stress out game. also how about civ 3? I miss that game

One reason Civ 4 was loved and still is loved is that it offers so much strategic and tactical depth. Over at Civ Fanatics forum, each Civ version has a "Strategies" section where people discuss strategies. Civ 4 has way more posts than 5 or 6, even when taking into account the years since release. Each Civ since 4 has got simpler, basically. Some like the simplicity, some prefer the more involved strategy of 4.

It's just best of series. I liked civ 5 and 2, I had "some" good time with 3... But 6 is equal to 1 in how much entertaining it was for me.. It's ok, but I just don't want to play it anymore. In case of 1 - some mechanics from it got old over time. In case of 6... It's bugging on my setup, I had problems even running it, but after playing it for few hours I decided I don't want it. I just don't like this game. So I would rate 4>5>2/3>1/6.

Big con in 2/3 was that unhappy cities were in full riot and that production overflow wasn't carried on to next unit... Sounds not bad in itself, but it just made me check each and every city before end of every turn...

But civ2 was my favorite for long long time, until good mods for civ 4 stared appearing on forum.

I tried to return to this game, and I don't get how I was so good at it when I was like 11 and didn't even know English yet, and now I can't even leave the Ancient Era because the AI swamps me in units in the blink of an eye

I loved civ2 scenarios, the ability to make deserts into plains. loved civ3, but losing the animations of the adivisors sucked, the nukes, bombing enemy in general or taking out a specific building or bombing their city hexes to destroy them. the ability to make armies, making roads everywhere, then upgrading them with RR. civ 4 was ..meh...it was different. didnt play it long. moved onto civ 5...great graphics...and that was it. . no army units with the generals, cant build roads or railroads really, never figured out the combat in civ 4 (i gave up on it) lost animations of wonders compared to civ3 and civ4, shitty soundtrack compared to civ 3 and civ 4. only played civ 5 until civ 6 came out. civ 6 sucked, hated that first opening sequence, i call it the woke opening...played a few hours...unistalled it. to me civ 3 has been the best, cant get it work anymore on the new windows upgrades, even with the steam help...hopefully civ gamers will get a better civ next version, if not i will be done with the civ series...just like masters of orion 2...awesome game...and they ruined it with that new one.

You didn't mentioned the most interesting feature that introduced at the time it came out, which is customization, replayability and multiplayer.
Also a more detailed reference to FFH2 and a few other major mods that actually should a video of their own.

Mods in Civ 4 were what glued me to that game for so long. There are plenty of really good mods, such as Rhye's and Fall of Civilizations (and it's modmods), Realism Invictus, Varietas Delectat, Fall from Heaven II and many, many more. I didn't play basic game that much, I always played some mods. Unfortunately, I didn't found such variety of mods for 5 and 6. Somehow Civ 4 allowed modders to mold itself into ways not possible for other Civ games.
Oh, and while I like customization of religions in 5 and 6, I don't like that religions are tied to certain civ that created it. In Civ 4 religions are more independent from it's founder, and also one civ can create multiple religions, even all of them, which is a bit more realistic to me.

I still play Civ4 BTS with mods since 2006/7, but one thing I really hate about it is turns taking ages to load the more time you spend playing it. Not sure if related to being a 32-bit application.

Having played both a bunch here's some thoughts.
I feel playstylewise, civ4 offers much less variety than 6. I enjoy both, but civ4 you will be building cottages on every square, unless you go for great people farms. Civ6 you can do all kinds of things and city specialization is much more of a thing,(besides production vs cottages vs great people). Civs in 4 are kinda homogenous, but then again, that's less railroading so I kinda like it in a way. I like the stacks as a more challenging and long-term oriented combat mechanic, especially against the ai. City automation is complete balls in civ4, having big empires the micromanagement gets pretty insane. Tech tree is more open-ended in civ4, you can skip a lot more stuff, and lack of era score and eurekas feels freeing to me. Like I'm focusing on the game more instead of trying to reach some arbitrary conditions. Not that they are bad mechanics, far from it. Culture and religion are underdeveloped in 4 but arguably too complex in 6. I remember when I first founded a religion and got hit with the perk selection screen I had to close the game and take a walk due to decision paralysis. Probably prefer 6 on those in the end. I like civ4 civics a lot, but again, very simplistic. Still a lot of things you can do with it (just slavery alone is damn fun mechanic to exploit), so it doesn't necessarily need to be any more complex. Both are great. In summary: If you like chess more than crusader kings go with 4, and vice versa.

I mean just tell everyone Leonard Nemoy speaks to you and that alone should be enough to get people to try it. Also I miss how your cities progressed like they did in 4 where they start out as little huts in the stone age showing truly to scale you started out as a tribe, then it turns into a village and then a town and finally a bustling city.

Civ4 is an amazing but not perfect game, if it is modded.

Unmodded, it is unworthy for a Civilization game and feels half done.

That is what I think about it^^

The culture system peaked here. Hate the drab tourist system and arbitrary, permanent boundaries. The limited build charges, incremental price increase for workers and builders, and whole diplomacy system are also garbage, but I will hand it to Civ6 that religious combat is pretty fun. I just wish Civ4 had a mobile/iPad version
