Burmese food is something totally unique- a flavor profile shaped by an ancient history with roots connecting the empire to powerful culinary neighbors like China, India, and Siam, but with indigenous techniques and ingredients that make this cuisine all its own.

Somehow, in twelve years cooking and eating in Asia, it never occurred to me how strange it was that I didn't know anything about Burmese food. I never questioned why Thai, Vietnamese, and Malaysian food could be found anywhere, but the largest geographic country in mainland Southeast Asia- a place with a 4000-year history and an outsized influence on the continent- was invisible. But then I tried my first Burmese meal, and all of a sudden, a million questions needed answering.

This video is an attempt to answer- maybe not all of those questions, but at least...say...two or three? What are some of the iconic dishes in Myanmar? How did Burmese food take shape? And why have I never encountered it before?

We're diving into the Bangkok Burmese refugee diaspora to get as deep as we can into Thailand's hidden Myanmar subculture in a culinary adventure on OTR.

As a kid growing up in Myanmar and having moved to the States, I always wondered what stopped Myanmar and Burmese cuisine from breaking through like Vietnamese, Thai, Indian and many other southern and south east asian cuisines have in the West. I felt that the focus on savory over sweet would have translated really well to western pallets and this video does an amazing job detailing why Burma effectively fell off the map

Thank you for this video! I watched it a few months ago and I'm happy to report that I have flown to Bangkok twice and eaten at all 3 restaurants featured here!

Shwe Htee felt homely. Kalyana unique and upscale. I love that I could try multiple dishes with the regional sets. I'm sitting at Mandalay Food House eating mohinga as I type this. All 3 restaurants had mostly Burmese patrons when I visited.

Thank you for making this video which resulted in me trying this wonderful cuisine 🥰

I’m kind of sad and frustrated seeing this clip coz there’s no way to avoid that brutal, cruel, stupid and egocentric group of militants to talk about any aspects of Burmese history. Thanks for your video anyway!!

When and where is GooGoo expanding to Europe? This is such a fabulous statement of the amazingness of Burmese food. There used to be a couple in Manhattan a few decades ago. Not easy to find them. None in UK or in Europe?

Thank you so much for making this video. This video actually brings so much of mixed feelings. Getting emotional and tears up bit. Being a Burmese away from home and seeing all of my favorite foods from home (especially seeing someone enjoying) makes me feel very happy and proud of my culture. Hope the world knows us for our culture, food and hospitality of people one day.

You need to realise the difference between English and British. Burma was controlled mainly by a large Scottish business community but hey let's blame the English.

As someone from Myanmar There is a lot more food if you travle to each area of places. Because most of the foods and the originals didn't come from a single place so i hope you visit the east and west so you can see the originals cooked and made in their homeland

Knowledge and joy like this is what preserves humanity. Though I have lived in both India and Japan and traveled through SE Asia, my own heart language of food will always be middle-class US Midwest where I grew up. Thank you for helping show how food is central to our identities, yet also our greatest ambassador.

EDIT: I want to go to Mynamar sooooo bad. But at least I know another place to try the food!
