Hey Michael the ad is awesome and I’m convinced to purchase the surf shark vpn
ОтветитьThis is WAYY better than WINE!
ОтветитьI wish lin4win were a thing. I like the feature, where you switch between two displays, one for X, and one for Windows. I think it is sick, and definitely a cool party trick. "Look, my Windows have Linux paths init."
ОтветитьI am glad for that we today have WinWine .
ОтветитьWonderful retro experience for me. I had to ask myself, "Hey...when did I use Red Hat with the free options?" I checked, and I think it may have been right after the IPO. I felt a little odd realizing that the numbers for the version only started in, like, 2002. I got a version of Mandrake at some, "Dumping our data junk," that passes as a computer show in 90s. That Mandrake was a superior system to the Red Hat I tried so much later. I even kept the little tech book that came with it for a couple of decades. Nothing could touch it...until I finally found my true home in Debian. A distro that told you what to do when something went wrong! That's almost unimaginable back then. How could you top that?
When a geek and a distro love each other very much, they bond in a special hug called, "Optimization."
With all the videos on this channel demonstrating (attempting) using random super-old Windows applications for old Windows OSes on more recent Windows versions and now this one about Win4Lin, I'm surprised you haven't looked at running old Windows applications in Wine yet. Unless you have, but I haven't seen it. Wine's come a long way and although there are still plenty of problem programs, quite a few less complex ones (and even a suprising number of more complex ones) work quite well. Wine is also a lot more mainstream and easier to get, so I guess that might be part of it.
Ответитьlove the disket wall you got going on there :D very retro
ОтветитьWe used to have sun microsystems that got upgraded with redhat and finally server 2003.
Ответитьthat is a fun video
ОтветитьThis is so cool is there a version of this for more moden windows and Linux versions? Patching the Linux kernel rather then emulation in a virtual machine is smart, would be so much faster
Ответитьyou should get a printer for all of these OSs to test out how they would deal with printing :D
ОтветитьMaybe running Doom inside Windows might've worked, plus you could've tried to install Direct X 6, not supporting DirectX acceleration doesn't mean you can't install it, maybe Half-life could've worked in software mode still (albeit I bet the performance would've been absolutely terrible).
Ответитьyeah that's late 90s style 6.1 didn't come out till 1999
ОтветитьThis is so fun haha thanks for sharing
Ответитьomg imagine this for modern Linux and Windows
ОтветитьTo be fair, at this point Doom's Linux port had been open-sourced by John Carmack for a couple years by then so there's not much point to using Win4Lin to play Doom.
Ответитьold gnome just looked like old windows. glad it doesn't any more
Ответитьi dont like how we dont have this but we have wine smh.... this could of been way better
Ответитьyou should try to install an emulated linux environment on the emulated win98se environment and see how that runs
Ответитьi love your channel im on a different account then i used to use but i have been watching since 2021 i really love your content and just to let you know im subscribed on both of my accounts
Ответитьah yes, Winux 4 Lindows
ОтветитьI have a question when are you going to do a face reveal
Ответитьahem wine ahem
ОтветитьYes I remember win4lin back when I was attempting to experimenting with different linux distributions like.
Mandrake, Redhat, Ubuntu, Fedora + Gentoo
So, you can run windows under Linux, so you don't need to use windows? I'm so glad they figured out better way to run windows apps and SteamOS also a thing.
ОтветитьI had this back in the day. It was magical. I had Windows on a different virtual console than X, and could switch back and forth between operating systems like they were desktops. It was actually faster and more stable than running Windows natively, somehow.
ОтветитьHey man!Can uplease help me?I have a Windows 98 pc and 0 drivers. The PC this way is unuseable.A tried burning the drivers on a CD and a DVD but a DVD/CD just didn't read the disks. And i don't know what to do.I would be great if you could help me!
Ответить"Easy to use and install!"
(Opens the terminal to install the tools)
Yeah, seems about right.
When I was very young, I dreamed of a computer that would boot to a GUI desktop in ROM and have icons for Windows, DOS, Linux, Mac OS, AmigaOS, OS/2 and even BeOS. Of course, there'd have to be CPU, sound, and graphic cards built in the machine for non-Intel OSes. Plus, the ability to run each machine in a window and share files across all platforms.
Yes, it was a very expensive dream, LOL.
With today's technology, this can all be easily be done. Think of it as a VM hardware and firmware (not software so much).
allready back then. if you use linux use linux.
what eva OS peepol have they run other OS on emulator why? happens be windows LOL
why not use windows and run linux console. infact its there allready no need emulate
I have an old emachines laptop that is running windows 7 if you are interested in it. Just let me know. I love your channel and your content. Keep up the amazing work
Ответитьthe huzz know i use win4lin
Ответитьi just watched vargskelethor's windows 98 exploration vod and saw this exact video when he was visiting warpstream. he didn't watch it tho.
ОтветитьSo it basically was the reverse of WSL? Interesting, I'd always thought it was more like WINE.
ОтветитьIn the land before WINE...
Ответитьthats literally wine but older
ОтветитьIs there anything equivalent in today's world?
ОтветитьApparently 5.5 supported the 2.6.x kernel... food for thought!
ОтветитьMake A Video On Testing Out “WinCDEmu”
According To Wikipedia, it’s an open-source utility for mounting disk image files in Microsoft Windows. It installs a Windows device driver which allows a user to access an image of a CD or DVD as if it were a physical drive. WinCDEmu supports ISO, CUE/BIN, CCD/IMG, NRG, MDS/MDF and RAW formats
You can try Solaris OS? .-.
ОтветитьI think this software sits between a virtual machine and something like WSL 2 but inverted
But it’s not similar to something like wine or WSL 1, which uses a translation layer instead of a VM
Ha, BOB !!!!
ОтветитьDOS full screen: Ctrl-Alt-1 (through 6). Login with the same credentials you use in KDM. then run the dos command. And it likely will run doom because it's not X, but just a console.
ОтветитьCongratulations, you found something that DOES NOT run Doom!
ОтветитьThis is very cool but I can’t imagine it attracting average Windows users to Linux. The installation process would be terrifying 😂
Ответитьwhat song do you use in you're outro? I wanna hear the full version.
