There are many people asking for the meaning of the Shloka in the comments. Writing my understanding of it below for my own satisfaction.

Gurur Brahma
Gurur Vishnu
Gurur Devo Maheshwaraha
Gurur Saakshaat Parabrahma
Tasmaye Sree Guruve Namaha

Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwar(another name for the god Shiva) are 3 important Gods in Hinduism, and considered like the Trinity of Hinduism. The entire song revolves around the Guru. The meaning of Guru is ones teacher or more specifically spiritual teacher.

The first 3 lines above say - My Guru is himself Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.

Although Hinduism allows and even encourages(for spiritual growth) belief in Gods with form(example Vishnu and Shiva), the ultimate spiritual truth contained in the Upanishads(the philosophical treatise of the Vedas) say that, everything in this world originates from Para Brahma or Absolute Consciousness which is WITHOUT form or attribute(even the name of this Absolute Consciousness obviously doesnt matter).

The 4th line says my Guru or Teacher is nothing, but ParaBrahma or Pure Absolute Consciousness. The word Saakshaat reinforces the meaning of Parabrahma and literally means "in Reality" or "Embodiement".

the 5th line means -- To such a Guru, I bow myself.


For someone who is not familiar with Eastern religions, this may seem confusing and absolute sacriliege. How can we treat our Guru(or spiritual teacher), who is a mere human, to be all this. This will require a more detailed explanation. But the short of it is that, it is an important method in Hinduism -- to have FULL faith in your Guru. The single minded devotion to your Guru is enough to focus your mind, and make spiritual progress in this birth.
