Mary Kidder Rak
Born in 1879 in Iowa. She graduated from Stanford University thinking she would teach history, but she met and married Charlie Rake. They moved to Arizona and purchased a 22,000 acre ranch that was formerly Camp Rucker, an old Army post, over 50 miles from the nearest town.
Starting off, she was afraid of cows. However, she learned everything about the livestock and the land, and fell in love with being a rancher. Charlie loved cooking and taking care of the house and she did not, so they basically switched roles, which was unusual back then.
She wrote two books about her life as a rancher, and also numerous other ones. She was devoted to the ranching life.
