You can see the moment that in (his mind) he realizes he’s been played by Dave and the one thing of value he got out of all of this (a real friend, a lover) has been robbed from him, in exchange for an illusion that doesn’t matter (his status as coach) mocked by the truth he now realizes everyone knows (that Dave is the real coach). So outwitted, alone, and humiliated (again, some in his head, some of it true— as Dave most certainly is playing along in this dangerous game) this repressed man is now ready to kill, in self-defense— of his own inner demons, and against the very predatory system of wealth that makes him as much a victim as everyone involved. That empathy is what Carrell expresses so well, by hardly saying a word, in the hands of a master filmmaker, saying everything.

I imagine that the first reaction when they announced a comedy guy such as Steve Carell to perform Du Pont might've sounded like a non-sense choice. But I think it was a clever casting move. Not just because Steve is an amazing actor but because the more I see this film the more I found similarities between John and another role performed by Carell himself: Michael Scott. Just think about it. They're both kind of losers looking for external approval using their power position to achieve it. Du Pont is just the tragic flip-side of Scott.

Damn that driver was a pussy. Sickly old man sitting inches from you, looking away, holding a gun in one hand for at least 5 seconds? Plus, whose to say the dude wouldn't have turned around and shot him too? In that situation you gotta take the chance and mollywhop the dude.

how the fuck do you get manslaughter for driving to a dudes house with a gun and shooting him dead with someone in your passenger seat as witness. what in the fuck, that is at least 2nd degree if not flat out murder in the first. at least he died in prison but still they shouldve thrown the fucking book at him.

As the film I've studied the most for film school, I'm still in awe of the simplicity of this scene; the levels of historical sublty and growing anxiety are next level terrifying. Bennett Miller is a master of his craft.

You can tell by the lack of any feeling in his eyes, how truly mentally ill he is. Shooting the gun with zero facial expression. Not even a wince. Scary thing is, there are people in the real world exactly like this!

From what I seen in documentaries and interviews, it seems none had respect for jon more than Dave. The fact that jon killed the only man who was greatful to him is beyond anything. I do agree with the movie trailer, the only thing more horrifying than the crime itself, is the man who did it.
