"I think it says a lot about American history that in the end, the war's outcome was ensured not just by military victories, but by a political one."

I love all Crash Course history videos, but I have so much trouble reading this sentence as something else than American exceptionalism and "only we have democracy" sort of deal.

Southern soldiers fought for slavery. Read their journals.

Wasn't the Civil War also caused by the secession of some Southern states?

The Civil War was about States' Rights... to own slaves. Slavery was, in every single way, responsible for the bloodiest conflict in American history.

I enjoyed Part 1 of the Civil War episodes. I am finding it hard to get to subsequent videos on my TV/Android Box set up. It would be nice if it just autoplayed the next episode in the series.
I got the quote being Grant btw!

It is overly simplified to say that the war was about slavery. It was not. Even your quote of Lincoln exposes that the war was not all about slavery Slavery was a part of the war, but not the reason for the war.

Head to head, Grant inflicted more casualties upon Lee’s forces than Lee inflicted on Grant’s forces. Grant was a better General than Lee, as Grant knew how to successfully launch an invasion (Siege of Vicksburg, Petersburg, Richmond, etc.) Lee’s two invasions into the United States were unsuccessful by any measure. Grant’s generals who served under him were at least as good as any of the rebel generals. To simply say that the Rebels had better generals than the United States is simply wrong. Can it be said that particular generals weren’t as good as others (I.e. Lee was better than Pope)? Yes. Definitely.

Southern rebels knew, according to their written correspondence, that they were fighting to preserve the institution of slavery. Sure, the rhetoric was typically, “We are fighting for our rights!” ...but they knew that they fought for the right to preserve slavery, the foundation of their economy.

My only comment is that 1860 upper Canada was trying to convince the maritime provinces to join the dominion and they rejected it because it meant a loss of sovereignty.

In fact eastern "Canada" supported the south BECAUSE it feared it's loss of sovereignty.

My guess is that was the root cause - the south didn't want to join the north because it meant a loss of its own governance.
