Buyer Beware - ROG STRIX G16 (2023) Review

I got caught out on the misleading marketing as well, in relation to the advertising images showing the number pad incorporated into the touchpad.
I purchased the laptop with the expectation of this feature. The images clearly show a number pad included in the touchpad.

When I turned the laptop on for the first time, I discovered there was no number pad.
I contacted ASUS immediately, who sent me a link to the latest number pad driver, which didn't sort the problem.

To their credit, they eventually offered to have the laptop picked up and sent to one of their service centres. Upon my request a ASUS representative confirmed the laptop did have the feature. A week later, the service centre emailed, advising that they had checked with ASUS who said the laptop didn't have the feature and they were returning the laptop to me!!

I contacted ASUS with this information. They were quite blunt with their reply, placing the blame back on me, claiming that I should have confirmed the features with the place of purchase and washed their hands of any further responsibility!!! How ridiculous is that ? So is it the buyers responsibility to confirm every specification and feature advertised on ASUS's own website ? How far do you go ?

So I lodged a complaint with the Office of Fair Trading, providing the email trail with ASUS support (which included confirmation from one of their own representatives that this model did include a numberpad) and screenshots from their own website clearly depicting the laptop with the number pad feature as evidence.

A few weeks later I received a reply to my email from Fair Trading that included ASUS Australia's response claiming they are "not the reseller, supplier, importer, or manufacturer of this product or its representative; we are the manufacturer's appointed Service Agent to provide Service and repair for ASUS products in Australia"

However, due to the intervention of Fair Trading, they did agree "in good faith"...... to provide me with a full refund of the purchase price if I return it to the place of sale. Unfortunately I purchased it from a retailer from the other side of the country, and I will have to wear the postage. So it's still going to cost me quite a bit in postage, but at least I do get my purchase price back and can choose a laptop that does meet my needs.

But yeah, BUYER BEWARE of ASUS's misleading advertising and they won't stand by their product advertising, instead throwing the blame back on their customers.

i got this exact laptop and mine has little to no bleed so it may be very bad quality control on q lot of them. i also specificaly chose it because i play lots of physics heavy games that use lots of cpu abd it runs them pretty amazingly things like beamng, kerbal space program, stuff like that

I got the Strix G16 with the newest i9 13900HX and mine boosts up to 4.98Ghz and it wont go further so the 5.6 ghz is a obvious lie but it performs very well, also the cooling on this thing is insane

I picked this up because it was literally the cheapest RTX 4080 laptop in the UK (although Amazon's listing claimed it was a 4090), and at up to 175w it doesn't feel gimped in that department but my god this 1200p screen is very very weak and feels like it's about 5-6 years old, the bleed is a total joke too. Also utterly baffling there's no windows hello on it at all

This video is gold. But what do you recommend me, if my budget is 1.5k$?

What I really liked in this laptop is no numpad and centered touchpad. This alone covers alot of cons of this laptop for me.

Whats the max ram capacity on this model? Asus shows 32GB is max but I've seen in forums and Amazon ppl upgrade it to 64gb?

Impressed you actually got to play games on it to test it. Mine arrived and after I installed Windows it crashed and wouldn't detect the SSD. Needless to say it got sent back and I got another brand.

I bought the ASUS - ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition 15.6" QHD Gaming Laptop - AMD Ryzen 9 5980HX and immediately regretted the purchase.
Overheating and low battery life were just the start. The overheating caused damage to the lousy little power cord connection.
Trying to get ANY resolution from Asus was a continuous exercise in futility.
Eventually tried Best Buy, as that was purchase location. Repaired at a cost of $300 as the rep on site for Asus refused responsibility. So a new motherboard and power supply was required.
My thinking that a $1700 laptop from a reputable company and store would be a good idea was all wrong.
Laptop arrived and was a brick. Now going on another round of repairs and a month of no laptop.
STAY AWAY FROM THIS MANUFACTURER!!!!

I just bought this laptop (although the one with the transparent keys) in November 2023 and they STILL have the image of the numpad not only in the sales images, but the trailer for the laptop as well. I specifically did not purchase a plug in numpad because of this. I'm so disappointed. I use the numpad in both gaming and work so it really messes me up not to have one.

Good review, but I have a suggestion. It would be great if you could test more demanding games like Cyberpunk, Control etc. instead of online competitive games like CS:Go or Rainbow Six Siege.

Good review, honestly, I Love my G16, I have the Nebula 240hz display and it's amazing paired with the 4070. I have a main gaming pc for when I am at home, I use this for work and gaming when I am away. so, for that it's been flawless.

They arent willing to cut their price gouging to give a good deal

The 460 version is Wayyyyyyyy more reliable. That nebula screen may do better with colors but it's horrible for longevity. Having none of these issues with the i7 4060 version. more powerful does not always mean better and this model of it proves just that.

Is it safe to buy the G16 now? Cuz I need it for studying, gaming,and whatever else i wanna do on it

For the price they are charging for, some of the ‘budget’ laptop reviewed by other reviewers are way better

asus rog strix g16 2023 i5 13450hx i bought this laptop 1week ago and where i tried geekbench 6 and cinebench r23 where the scores were too low as compared online scores...| my system scores are in cinebench r23 single 1500 multi 9000 ..|.. online score single 1788 multi 16000 or 15000 |.. and in geekbench 6 single 1407 multi 8489 online score 2266 multi 12093 i dont know what the problem....should we like update in bios.

The whole idea of a gaming laptop in itself is ridiculous and impractical for several factors, but hey, companies don't invent costumers needs.

I’ve been trying to hunt down the best RTX 4070 laptop for my needs, but I see a lot of hate on this gpu. I get why, but for me- it is more than enough, I had a laptop with the rtx 3070 ti with maxed tdp. Unfortunately I had to sell it, but It played all the games I loved at maxed settings without issue, so to see that the 4070 is an ever so slight improvement in performance, but even more energy efficient makes me happy. The main game I play is Dead by Daylight and that doesn’t upscale past 1080p well. So 1080p is my main focus, so this laptop will be a major consideration.

I'm stuck between lenovo legion pro 7i and rog strix g18 4080 I like the g18 more bcoz the 18" display its game changer for me but I'm afraid of coil whine and pixel bleeding please let me know which one you suggest me from your experience with g18

I was very close to buying the ROG Strix 18, but I think i'm going to wait for the 14th gen Meteor Lake laptops which are supposed to come out in December.
