In this video, I will focus on important events that occurred at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century in Korea; more precisely, the end of the Joseon Dynasty 조선 and the whole history of the Korean Empire (Daehanjaeguk) 대한제국 (1897-1910). During this relatively short period of time, Korea saw tremendous social changes and also a major loss of its sovereignty.

First, we will talk about Emperor Gojong 고종 and his role in all important events during this period.

Next, we’ll take a look at the Gwangmu Reform 광무개혁, which changed the social fabric of Korea: social status was abolished so commoners and nobles could communicate with each other using the same speech level. Commoners also started to use family names for the first time.

Next, we’ll discuss the Eulsa Treaty of 1905 을사조약 which made Korea a protectorate of Japan. Japan would be from that time on, in charge of Korea’s foreign affairs. In 1907, Gojong abdicated his throne in favor of his son Sunjong 순종. That same year, yet another treaty was signed, the Japan-Korea Treaty 한일신협약. This time, Korea’s internal affairs were turned over to Japan. Basically Korea, its Emperor and its people couldn’t run their country any longer.

Then, we’ll talk about the assassination of Ito Hirobumi 이토 히로부미 by An Jung-geun 안중근, who is now recognized as a national hero all over Korea.

Finally, we will take a look at the Japan-Korea Annexation Treaty of 1910 한일병합조약 which officially signalled the end of the monarchy in Korea as well as its independence. Korea would become a colony of Japan for the next 35 years…
