These companies are collapsing. They overestimated the value of their initial business models and continued to expand without rest. Now they're using ad revenue and surcharges in over-zealous fashion to sustain the extra load they "thought" they could handle.

It was bound to happen. 2019-2022 just accelerated the collapse.

I think it wouldn't have been so bad if YT didn't treat their users bad in the first place-
Like demonetizing them for a single second of music-

I don't mind paying for services, what I do mind is how prices keep creeping up and paid services keep sneaking in ads. We subscribed to Hulu to get rid of the ads, but the paid tier still has ads. We pay for Prime, but that also has ads. We pay for YT Premium, but even though we no longer get unskippable ads the creators just read off sponsored ads during the video. SponsorSkip will automatically detect and skip sponsor breaks, but I feel like it's only a matter of time before YT bans that too. It also pisses me off to no end when you have to pay extra for certain content on a service you already pay for(like needing AMC+ for another $9/mo to watch certain movies on Prime). After a while we were paying more than a cable bill for all these streaming services, and we still couldn't escape the ads. Don't even get me started on DRM- we're sorry, but this American-made movie is not available in your area. My area, which is.... America.

We were willing to pay, we wanted to consume content "the right way", but corporate greed soured that good will. We canceled most of the services and went back to torrenting, and we don't feel even a little bit bad about it. The silver lining of the adpocalypse/internet enshittification is that I've been spending way more time on 'analog' entertainment like reading, crafting, and trails instead of sitting on my butt watching shit all day long.

Videos that are important, like this one, no longer get recommended. They do not want anyone to know that they have ruined everything and their horrible policies are making our life worse

honestly i think its a double edge weapon, if there is a crisis and we got a premium subscription and people cant pay anymore they will pull away and the company will collapse in basically a few months, so i think its best for it to have both in the sense
but i am also for premium

I think the most insulting part is the amount of Ads that are just straight up Scams/False Advertising, if they're going to shove ads in our faces why can't they at least moderate the ads and make sure they aren't essentially peddling scams

Earlier I was listening to an Angus McSix album, and there were double ads between EVERY song, And once even right in the middle of a song. It's unacceptable and excessive.

It's sad. Ads are everywhere. In everything. Our lives have become an endless ad campaign. Even all the ad blockers combined won't make all the ads go away. Consumerism, manipulation and greed 'YOU NEED THIS! YOUR CHILD NEEDS THIS! YOUR FOLKS NEED THIS! HURRY UP! ORDER NOW! MOOOREEE!!!" screaming from like... everywhere... it makes me sick.

you say they're being "fair" while ignoring their pure greed, they're soulless corporations do u really think they give a shit about fairness? they take away value actively, not just with things like ads but making features worse or simply taking them away. they only get more greedy and care less, if they can get away with it then they'll do it. they rely on idiotic things like "yeah its fair, they need money too" even tho they've got too much money. They're greedy scum that will never be satisfied with "enough" only "more", just because they demand money doesn't mean we should comply. they ARE villains

I would be okay with ads, if it weren't for how venomous the ad model is at the moment. Literal malware and scams on Google Ads, Ads that break terms of service, and the increase of ads per time spent means that I would rather use an adblocker than deal with something that wastes my already limited time. It's multiple factors, not just one, and for that fact, I don't want to pay for the antidote for the poison being given to me, I want the poison to be burned and regulated until it's reasonable to turn off my adblocker.

It's just the enshitification of everythingz no company can ever settle on homeostasis, line must always go up. But in order for line to go up you have to squeeze out of people as much as possible. Capitalism demands infinite growth on finite resources and is therefore unsustainable.

The obvious third option is to start shutting down tech giants that don’t make money and send the internet back 20 years. The corpos don’t like that version of the internet…

To be honest when I’m not using a PC, I’m not even watching the ad, I’m watching the timer for the skip button, the ads don’t even work.

The term "freemium" seems very silly to me. Because it's not like it's free. You pay by giving your attention and time. And time and attention are worth money.
Actually it should be the other way around. People who watch the videos should be paid for giving their time. Companies will have to learn that not everything is about making money, or they will disappear. Because when someone does something that is completely paid, another company will appear to take their place being free.

No good product needs so much advertising. If the product is good, it sells itself.
Which makes me see that in reality, we live surrounded by companies that use advertising to sell their garbage.
That's why as a general rule, I never buy a product from a company that advertises.
