It's the Chinese people who lied about the result. People's communes were built for people to have free meals, and expected to work after those free meals. People however took the food for free but refused to work then lied about the harvest till the famine struck due to the fact no one actually worked after all the free meals provided (by Mao). Now who's fault. I don't think that it's the situation that Mao murdered them. People had that share of responsibility of whatever death toll you can come up with. Mao no doubt is responsible for providing a social model which never works. But he meant to build a paradise for the people in an impractical way. That's what communism is about anyway. Communism on the other, was the choice of the Chinese people.

Also the destruction of thousands of years of history and culture.

This is the legacy of Communism. Over and over again, communist, socialist governments are unsustainable and are directly responsible for the deaths of millions of their people. Mao, Stalin, Kamir Rouge, Argentina, Cuba, every time... Only young people think socialism is a good idea, because they have not lived long enough to see the results and are not interested in the history of these regimes. If not for trade with Europe and the US, China would have collapsed long ago.

How abt this: Up to 29 million Indians died of British induced famines during colonial rule. Including 4 million under Western hero Winston Churchill. Yet Churchill & the British Empire are seen by most UK & the West generally in a more positive light.
