What a pity that the times were-a-changing.....In the late 70ties and early 80ties,most of these bands disappeared. Genesis survived. But a 9/4 hammond against a 4/4 drums, that's still incredible

Genesis reach the apotheosis of their symphonic folk rock with "Suppers's Ready" from the "Foxtrot" LP. Most of the songs that follow are composed by keyboardist Tony Banks, while Peter Gabriel wrote the lyrics, which tell of carnal love (Man+Woman) and the spiritual love of the Bride as she meets the return of the Messiah. These five songwriters have never been equalled.

Gabriel sings, dances, dresses up. Drummer Collins provides the 2nd voice. Rutheford plays bass&12-string guitar. Hackett is the solo guitarist. And Banks is on keyboards. In 1975, Gabriel embarked on an extraordinary solo career. Collins surpassed him in pop song sales. Mike & Mechanics flirted with success. Hackett revisits Genesis. Banks ventures into classical music.

How genious they were. Here, we probably are in 1973, during the Foxtrot tour, with their best Supper's ready. Imagine that, some weeks later they will create and release SEBTP , another gem, and one year after The Lamb lies down on Broadway, a gem as well. I compare GENESIS to Mozart or Beethoven.
No they are GENESIS. Thank you my God , my Lord, Lord of Lords.

It's a mini-opera of unbelievable force. Amazingly inventive and a true chef-d'œuvre.

What amazes me is that this magnificent musical journey of foreboding, mysticism, interspersed with whimsicality. and eventual optimistic resolution was written in their early 20s and that the provenance of this prodigious musical talent was a staid ( at that time, at least) Surrey public school.

The single LP release of this song occurred the day I was born and I want this song played at my funeral. It frequently moves me to tears. For me it approaches musical perfection.

Stunning! The conclusion of the song is extremely compelling, even prophetic, perfectly aligned with the Book of Revelation:
