germany has a very simple and blunt culture. u have to show passion will and fight for everything u do especially in football. there are not many german footballer who had talent in form of playing skills. german players mostly all came through passion fighting and will. özil was one of the best if not the best german footballer as playmaker but his passion wasnt recognized, at least visually. i can remember my grandparents getting upset when german players didnt sing along with the national anthem - not just özil - and slumped their shoulders during the game and meanwhile you hear the Italians screaming their national anthem and you can feel they are proud and love to play for their country. many dont understand why the players dont show the german mentality, especially when they earn millions from the sport, which is loved in germany. u can see the same phenomenon with gnabry and sane for example. the combination of "migrant", who doesnt work and show bad body language, and the thing with erdogan were like a godsend for the media and society and unfortunately led to how the germans think about özil today. no question, being close to erdogan wasnt the best idea, but what we made of it wasnt fair to özil, who has done a lot to date.
i think that nowadays for many germans the admiration of özil stops where the football field ends. geniuses always come with a flaw and mesut was a genius on the field who sadly will not get any recognition.

To summarize: Mesut was not deemed German because the german media is very very racist and so are many people who consume it in return. Being a Muslim and looking "foreign" is a one way ticket to being a scapegoat for any failure. Can you imagine a third generation citizen of any country in which that citizen does the biggest possible achievement in a certain domain and in return gets metaphorically "Killed" ? other nations would give medals, but other nations don't have BILD. In my country, Tunisia, we had a brazilian player named Silva Dos Santos, this guy was integrated so well that he decided to get naturalized and won the only African Cup of Nations for Tunisia in 2004, this guy is obviously non Muslim, he wears a cross when he plays, and probably had not spoken very good Tunisian, till this day, every body would mention him like a hero, and im pretty sure he got like a medal or something.

He didnt sing the german national hymn. when he played for germany and beat turkey 3:1 in berlin, turkish fans booed at him. HE APOLOGIZED to them. Thats humility and respect. his heart lies with turkey not germany. i respect him as a great footballer, but he didnt love germany with his heart which i find sad. he betrayed us partly, as he chose to respect turkey more than germany.
