pretty awesome quick tutorial. I always struggle with understanding the relationship between the top head and snare side/bottom head of the snare. is the snare side head tighter than the top if you want high tuning?

One thing I've learned if your drums are hard to tune redo the bearing edges I mean all you got to do is spend the drum on sandpaper flat and take off the highspots then go back by hand with sandpaper to take a little Material off the inside of the area that was flattened it makes a huge difference and put a little soft wax on the bearing edges

Thank god DW has increased their thread count on tension rods, I mean that was a real problem for decades.... drummers complaining the reason for difficulty tuning a drum because an already fine pitch tension rod just didn't have enough threads per inch to dial in the desired note. Then Mr DW himself Jon Good makes this vid to prove his skill onto anyone who may not even own a DW drum or set. But wasn't the reason for untunable drums caused by the industry standard tension rod? , then DW ultimately fixed the problem with their innovative ultra fine pitch tension rods ......Mr Good?....

Seems aggressive, 5 half turns to start on first lug? In a factory setting it makes since for speed, but wouldn’t you want to do half turns all around 5 times? When a new set is bought who says “yea, that’s perfectly tuned”. 😂

I assume these are DW's proprietary lugs with ultra fine threads? If I used that many turns on my snare drum, I'd rip the head out of the hoop!

You can struggle all day with this method,go out and buy a 50 dollar drum dial it let's you see each lug are the same tension, I've been playing for 44 years and my friends use a drum dial, I tuned drums the same way John is but if you want to hear a big difference it's a one time buy,you will notice your band members will notice and even people that come out and see you can tell a difference 👍 your welcome 😁

Watched a dozen quick videos to refresh myself with tuning them. This was head and shoulders above all others. Just wish I didn’t waste all night with all the other videos.

i really think that something should be addressed here with tuning drums. you actually have to have an ear for pitch when tuning drums, which lots of people just do not have. BUT, lots of great drummers don't even know how to tune a drum, and they still play great. i wish more professional drummers would admit on video for learning drummers that tuning the drum takes a lot of patience, but a great drummer could know nothing about tuning and still play well, especially in a full band setting. i believe that young drummers can be discouraged about their playing after watching drum tuning videos.

Now let's see him do this in a noisy sports bar before a gig trying to find the pitch with 30 TVs blasting a basketball game "poing poing poing poing HE SHOOTS AND HE SCORES!! YAAY!!" JK, we dive bar drummers can't afford DW LOL

I learned how to tune my kit about 15 years ago. Been playing since I was 6, I'm now 50. Do the math, a lot of drummers have this issue. Pr9blem is most band teachers don't know because they aren't percussuonists ans most wood shedders are like I dont know, I just know what I like.
