On February 7th, 2024 marine protected area expert Professor Mark Costello presented some of the myths and misunderstandings around marine protected areas, some of the "cons" in conservation and some of the evidence for the benefits and disadvantages of MPAs. He discussed how we can achieve the optimal protection of marine life in meeting the "30by30" global goals through systematic conservation planning and, together with colleagues, present the goals and activities of the MPA Europe project.

MPA Europe is mapping optimal locations for Marine Protected Areas (MPA) in European seas for a network including high biodiversity of species, habitats, and ecosystems, as well as blue carbon stores. This will enable stakeholders, including national and regional authorities, to design optimal MPA and optimise the inclusion of biodiversity, blue carbon, and ecosystem services in transboundary Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) and climate change mitigation plans.

By using holistic measures of biodiversity to encompass variation within and between species and ecosystems (including many environmental variables), as well as carbon cycle dynamics and climate change scenarios in European seas, MPA Europe is committed to: (1) map an optimal MPA network prioritized for biodiversity protection and blue carbon benefits; (2) map species richness based on observed and modeled data under different climate scenarios; (3) inform on the potential geographical distributions of important biogenic habitats; (4) provide the first data-driven classification of ecosystems in both shallow and deep European seas; and (5) provide an online European marine biodiversity atlas.

To take such an inter-disciplinary approach, the MPA Europe team includes experts in marine biology, taxonomy, ecology, oceanography, biogeochemistry, and biogeography, MPA network design, benthic habitat mapping, carbon dynamics, and species distribution and climate modelling, plus marine spatial planning and stakeholder engagement. The project started in January 2023 and will end in April 2026.

MPA Europe is a project co-funded by the European Union and UK Research and Innovation
