I believe most of EA is common sense - I am happy to help if it makes a difference and I believe in it. Sure, it is a nerds, rational version of it. And yes, those Start Up Kids believe they invented the world and have a hard time understanding their place within a bigger context - like normal people have that.

But I believe it's their best version of doing good, and let the results speak for or against it.

That's how they defined it, let's take them by their word.

My understanding of EA and longtermism is limited to this video, sure, but it gives me terrible vibes. Almost like "pro-life" arguments-- sacrifice today for a better tomorrow! Don't abort that child that may kill the mother, it could save the world!
Those suffering *today*, though they may be less in number, are in no way less impactful. It's that idea about giving that homeless person three dollars, instead of donating it elsewhere.
Betting on this 'future' in the hopes that some day the numbers will come up better, isn't just hopeful thinking, it's gambling. Make a better world *now*. Or maybe I'm just impatient, lol!

It sounds like Longtermists are talking about "legacy". The idea of creating something that one can leave behind, after one's death, that would somehow benefit future people, who have yet to exist. This could come in many forms; organisations, institutions, literature, legislation, religion, inventions, research, political movements, etc.
But creating a legacy assumes these non-existent people would share one's values, morality, or personal tastes. That somehow these "legacies" won't become outdated, and outright offensive to future non-existent people.
And this talk of protecting the future. From what exactly? What imagined threats do these wealthy individuals perceive? Are they really afraid of Skynet? They do know of Vocaloid's do they not? In Japan there are AI pop idols who are entirely digital, and they entertain millions of people across the globe with songs they themselves create with some prompts. We have AI Art happening that can be quite amazing, and odd, but to call art odd, is a bit of a stretch, until you see AI art. Notice how none of these AI, machine rebellion dystopia science fiction movies ever take into account the arts & literature AIs. Yes, we also have literature AIs, and
it'll only be a matter of time before the philosophy AIs show up.
It would appear, that these Effective Altruists, have very much limited their scope.
So, clout, a.k.a. whatever is popular or favorable to this organization or movement is what's taken seriously? A charity movement, ran and operated by those born into wealth, who know nothing of poverty, of what it is to live in it, how people end up there, what it does to you, how people struggle to get out of it and often fail, and why most of all, people give up and stay there, no matter what you do, or give them.
I was born into the lower middle class, I assume it was lower middle class. My mother was a single parent raising my sister and I off her U.S. Marine Corps income, and child support. I struggled in my twenties to stay afloat financially, my mother's Boomer era mentality has no understanding how it's possible for a man to struggle so. Mental illness is what brought me to homelessness, and was the cause of my inexplicable struggle. Ask my mother, and she'll say I simply wasn't trying hard enough. I have case workers, and homeless shelter behavioral health counselors who would argue otherwise.
The wealthy, and even the upper & lower middle classes haven't a clue what's down here, and they have no idea how to help.
Religion don't help, I can tell you that much, it's good for a weekly meal, and clothing donations, but that's about it.
I'm currently in Section 8 housing, across the street from the homeless campus I was living at.
I am very grateful I am no longer on the street. And yes, I said campus. The homeless situation in San Antonio, Texas just as it is in San Diego, California is such that a mere shelter is by no means enough. A campus the size of a community college is what we have now. It's a band-aid for what appears to be a worsening problem.

I think PT is awesome and I have no issue with what I'm about to say but does she ever get pooped on for all the over the top outfits and props being; well, conceivably a bridge too far into capitalism? I wrote an essay on altruism and egoism, the case of dogs vs blind poor people is a matter of not effective altruism, altruism is not about being effective or not, is about a matter of sacrificing something or yourself in making other individuals feel better, it's just egoism put into the formula what cancellate altruism and make it a "positive egoism" action. I wrote that like 3 years ago...
