The BIGGEST mistake you can make overseeding your lawn

Just done an overseeding and top-dressing job. Expecting it to fail. Was my first time doing it, and ended up walking all over it and compressing all the top soil, and didn't spread it enough. Might have to leave it for winter and do a full refurb come spring.

Hi, I have overseeded some small areas of my lawn where they were some patches, is it safe to apply fertiliser a few days later like Scotts extreme green slow release fertliser, will this cause any adverse effects?

I used wayyy too much seed when I created a new lawn last year. Rather than getting a measuring tape out, I tried to eye-ball it - that was a mistake! Initially it looked awesome! But by summer, it got way too thick and then suffered for months from heat stress (I guess down to overcrowding, and too much competition for water!). Now in Autumn, I'm going to scarify, topdress and overseed, in the hope that next year I can try again!

Essentially my laziness to measure correctly led to a bad lawn that I couldn't do much about for 6 months! We have long summers around 40C, with little to no rain whatsoever, so you just can't scarify in those conditions.

Hello sir , could i have a question please . I bought a very bad quality turf from B & Q they left it out and from sun was burn too much it was so hot when i movet it but i never check actualy the turf on place . When i got home i saw it and went back they ddnt accept it so my question is i did put the turf and is heavy i mean very heavy burned 90% is gray no grass will this regrow in time ?? i have it 3 days now watering every morning .

Hi Robbie - I scarify and overseed at least once a year, sometimes twice (always in spring or autumn), and then fertilize regulalrly through the year. But everytime I scarify I have a huge amount of thatch (not moss, as I keep this under control), meaning that a couple of runs of the scarifier and I have next to no green grass left (unlike your video). I live in North Wales very close to the coast and my soil is very sandy, or rather my sand is a little bit soily. The lawn looks terrible after scarifying but recovers eventually, but can you please advise what I might be doing wrong? Thanks

Im so sick of this shit!!!! Its easier to grow pot in my basement then it is to grow my lawn back!!!! Im on my second attempt here and for a 54 year old guy with a broken back and shoulder, this is a tragedy to keep having every bird in the world eating my money up and then just having this shit refuse to grow!!!! This is all too much bullshit and it all ridiculous!!!! FUCK ME FUCK MY LAWNS JUST FUCK IT ALL AT THIS POINT!!!! Just throwing the seed down on to the lawn turns it into bird feed

My lawns battered .. a mixture of to much clay soil underneath.. drainage is awful.. dry in summer yet to wet and water logged in winter. It's so patchy.. what would you recommend.. only 14 x 14 ft to..

I mis read the box on some "weed" control lawn feed thinking it was "seed" Waited 3 weeks Then seeded. The lawns now dead as a dodo...how can i rescue it? The lawn wasnt bad to start with but feel ive ruined it....uk based. Should i start again in autumn?

I used a spot filler to cover a 4x4 bare spot in my yard; I believe the spot filler was for the wrong grass seed 😢 (fescue instead of Bermuda). The fescue grows quicker/taller than the Bermuda - should I spray this area and replant Bermuda or attempt to dig up the fescue and overseed?? Just discovered your channel, great video, thanks!

I use my mower's bagging capability to vacuum up debris after dethatching/scarifying. Sometimes dethatching before mowing such that the passes with the mower are double-duty: cutting and vacuuming.

My wife and I did so.e substantial work on our lawn around March 12. We scarified and overseeded the lawn. I watered regularly but on the 17th the rains came. The rain has been rather consistent which in not the norm here. I told me wife "it looks like St. Patrick's Day brought some Irish weather with it."

After my in-laws retired from the military they purchased this house in 1993. We inherited it 11 years ago. My wife told me she sees grass growing places in the yard that it never grew before, lol.

I've overseeded and came here to see when I can cut my grass... basically got a list of mistakes I've just made. Tbf, I know my 4 year old grass seed (more mouse dung than seed).probably not great... but it was free

I use blood and bone mix on my lawn and it works really well i have a dog so have to work it into the lawn as its toxic to dogs i think after about 2 weeks of feeding it it changes to a really dark thick green and you can feel its alot stronger under foot it becomes alot more dence and it grows faster for the next 3 months i only feed it twice a year

I just tossed handfuls of grass seeds over a huge fire patch on my lawn, grass is now growing there stronger than the rest of the lawn lol, pretty sure its a different breed too, but still , i did zero effort and got away with it

Just commenting to help you out. Nobody in the states does a job like you do and if you were here you’d be my dude.
Seeding has to be the most frustrating thing I do. 2 plots side by side. One flourishes. One looks like my mother in law. Just random success.
I do not scarify but try to aerate. I don’t roll the turf but try to walk and pound with the side of a metal groundskeeper rake.
Do you try to cover the seed with anything? I’ve tried light peat moss, light compost, fine topsoil. Not any noticeable differences.
I truly believe it boils down to luck. That perfect storm of moisture, temperature, and sun.
