In regards to Ram, I recommend switching to Safari. Much more ram friendly than Chrome and also energy/battery efficient.

I never got the buffer you are talking about when editing. But I do use Safari instead of Chrome, so this might be it. I usually have 20 tabs open, so it's definitely not that in my opinion. Also, I edited some videos in Final Cut Pro on my wife's Air M2 (8GB RAM) and had no buffer issues, so it must be something else.

There is a false and misleading narrative.
Personally, I have M2 Pro with 16GB of RAM and 512 SSD, I do advanced video editing with Final Cut Pro (4k, 6k, raw video) but I've never experienced any slowdowns or hesitations. Always everything very responsive, fast and silent like ai Air!
I did some video and photo export tests comparing it with a 14" Macbook Pro M1 10-core 1TB SSD and the base M2 Pro was faster in everything!
Anyway, I confirm that 32GB of RAM is much more important than having 1TB of SSD.
This is because 3GB/s still guarantees you a great speed for any type of operation, but 32GB of RAM guarantees that you will practically never have the internal disk affected by swap (which can affect the health of a disk regardless of speed)!

I am looking for a new macbook pro and am confused between 2 models

1) Macbook pro m2 pro 14 inches with 10 core CPU, 16 core GPU, 16gb RAM and 512gb SSD

2) Macbook pro m1 pro 16 inches with 10 core CPU, 16 core GPU, 16gb RAM and 1TB SSD

Should I go for the latest chip in the
market or a previous version that gives me better speakers, battery, screen and double storage?

Shame the MacBook Air's are limited to 24GB RAM (even though that costs the same as the 32GB upgrade on the MacBook Pro's).

So the reason people might be commenting you need the 1tb version is because of the swap memory - if you run out of ram the Mac will utilise memory from the ssd however on the m2 models the read and write speeds of the ssd are halved on the 512gb models meaning the swap memory usage is much slower

Many thanks for your video I’ve been looking for a review on the battery i just purchased this & i find it consuming 10% of battery per hour of use & i do only internet browsing & Netflix… so if you say “after 2 hrs of browsing I found my battery at 95%” does that mean that my machine is faulty & needs to be replaced

Btw i have tried MacBook air m2 for 2 months the battery on that machine was crazy I charged only once a week but had to return it for graphics card issues twice then i had enough & now i have this machine but i find the battery draining so much faster and i wonder if i need to replace the machine?? Never had my Windows laptop freeze, when I was doing heavy video editing and had Chrome open. It also has 16gb RAM and it is a laptop from 2019.

Yeah Chrome is a memory hog ☹ not as optimized as Safari but a lot of the programs people used are embedded in Google's software. I have this same Laptop but my work is a lot more excel spreadsheet based and coding not so much video editing and all that. I could realistically do most of my work on a cheap laptop, which I'll do most of the time but I really liked this, I should have went with the air but the base model specs were better plus the sd card and extra thunderbolt port, I would have also liked 4 though even though I can get by fine without them I just rather have more options not less.

Hey i am reading lots of comments about the 16gb RAM being maxed out due to the 512 storage? I am considering to get 1 M2 Pro with the base configuration, mostly will be using it for photo/video editing on Photoshop, premiere pro etc. Should I upgrade to a 32GB RAM or 1TB storage?

Great review but you got one thing VERY wrong.

You say you don't need a bigger SSD but in fact SSD speeds impact your workflow tremendously especially when you run out of RAM, the plot twist here being 512 GB SSD is way slower than even 512 GB SSD from M1 as it uses fewer chips, so in your case 1 TB SSD possibly could've saved your life, but you went with both insufficient amount of RAM AND a very slow (for Apple's standards) disk.

Also what you see in Activity Monitor is not really that reliable for RAM consumtpion, you said Chrome eats up 3 GB only after its start but it's not entirely true. For over 10 years now, since MacOS Mavericks, MacOS philosophy is that "unused RAM is wasted RAM" so there are many low-priority tasks that eat up RAM virtually but drop it instantly once it's needed. I'm writing this from a 32 GB RAM Mac and I've currently got 30 GBs "used" according to Activity Monitor. And currently I have only a few apps running (Spotify, Slack, Chrome, Firefox - both with less than 20 open tabs).

They recommend 1 tb because of swap file speed when ram goes off. There is an issue with 512 gb sad speed

10 cores may get a little hotter but run much quieter. even under heavy load the sound is uniform.

Why would you need 10 Chrome tabs open at once?
